My Way
Mr. Self Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Zagadat, it's your boy Eazi

I left without my pride
It won't be the first damn time
Don't even ask me why
That's what you do to me
I'll be the first to break
I've given all it takes
But this love we can't maintain
This time you cut too deep

I know we good but we so bad together
I know you know that you're my guilty pleasure
I give an inch you give a different measure
You do, you do, yeah
And every touch you give me I remember
I know you know that you're my guilty pleasure
I give an inch you give a different measure

I keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going, going

I be, I be callin' you back
Even when it's over, it's over, I'm callin' you back
I buy you a bond, tripple K
You get my love trapped, trapped in the bando, babe
I be, I be callin' you back
Even when it's over, it's over, I'm callin' you back
I buy you a bond, tripple K
You get my love trapped, trapped in the bando (ooh)

One thing I know is clear
Your ex and me don't compare
When you're bringin' her up, I don't care
I do too much for you
Halfway is more than fair
You don't know how to get there
And that kinda makes me scared
I should find someone new

I know we good but we so bad together
I know you know that you're my guilty pleasure
I give an inch you give a different measure
You do, you do, yeah
And every touch you give me I remember
I know you know that you're my guilty pleasure
I give an inch you give a different measure

I keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going, going

I be, I be callin' you back
Even when it's over, it's over, I'm callin' you back
I buy you a bond, tripple K
You get my love trapped, trapped in the bando, babe
I be, I be callin' you back
Even when it's over, it's over, I'm callin' you back
I buy you a bond, tripple K
You get my love trapped, trapped in the bando (zagadat)

Oh you the fair girl, you're my lover
And you know seh you're my guilty pleasure
You got a man but he know the answer
'Cause that's just the way it is, the way it is
You can call my number
Anytime you want me, girl I'll answer
Girl I wanna be your secret lover
'Cause that's just the way it is, the way it is
Just the tip, just the tip
You love it when I put just the tip, just the tip, yeah
Rock to this, rock to this
When you hear the song, I hope we can rock to this
You got a man but we'd be good together
'Cause you're a queen and I can treat you better
So baby come, let me show you
The way it is, the way it is

I keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going out of my way
Keep going, going

I be, I be callin' you back
Even when it's over, it's over, I'm callin' you back
I buy you a bond, tripple K
You get my love trapped, trapped in the bando, babe
I be, I be callin' you back
Even when it's over, it's over, I'm callin' you back

I buy you a bond, tripple K
You get my love trapped, trapped in the bando, babe (keep going, going)

Overall Meaning

The song "My Way" by Mr. Eazi features lyrics about a tumultuous relationship between two people who can't seem to stay away from each other despite things never working out. The singer expresses his frustration with constantly going out of his way and sacrificing his own pride for someone who cuts too deep, yet he can't help but continue to call them back. He recognizes that they are bad together but also acknowledges the pleasure that comes from being with this person who is his guilty pleasure. The song also contains verses in which the singer reassures the person that he can treat them better than their current partner and that they should come to him instead.

The lyrics paint a picture of a toxic but irresistible relationship where the parties involved are aware of the issues but still are unable to let go. The repeated line of "keep going out of my way" highlights the singer's willingness to do whatever it takes to keep the relationship going, even at the cost of his own well-being. The theme of love being a form of addiction and the struggle to break free from it is prominent throughout the song.

I know this quote wasn't in the video but my fav Miyagi quote which still speaks to me every day:
"Daniel-san, never put passion before principle. Even if win . . . . you lose."

WHAT I LEARNT: He's talking about compromising an invaluable part of one's self. A tradeoff to one's own detriment.

QUOTE CONTEXT: Mr Miyagi was recalling when he was 18, he had broken tradition and dishonoured his best friend Sato by marrying a girl he loved Yuki who Sato was arranged to marry. Sato challenged Miyagi to a fight to regain his honour.
PRINCIPLE: Miyagi didn't believe in fighting, or that violence, (possibly being killed) would solve the conflict. Rather than restoration, it would make matters worse by harbouring animosity and perpetuating future cycles of violence. Miyagi was taught to only use violence (Karate) in defence and as an absolute last resort, which he eventually agreed to when Sato threatened to destroy their village and sell the land if he didn't.
Growing up Mr Miyagi fondly remembered the good memories of his childhood with Sato, a highly valued relationship.
Mr Miyagi's actions, however, put him in a moral dilemma.
He's forced to choose between his love for Yuki (PASSION) and its consequences which would result in a violent and possibly deadly confrontation with Sato, OR stay true to his (PRINCIPLE) of no fighting which due to Sato not being able to be reasoned with caused Miyagi reluctantly made the very difficult decision to leave Okinawa believing it to be the better of two evils.

Principles are truth statements, and truth ties us to reality. We all build our lives on truth (principles), they inform our actions and help shape our worldviews.
Passion, however, is an innate drive within that feeds on the specific desires of a person. (Good or bad)
Passion should never be allowed unimpeded free reign over principle but must always be submissive to it.
Allowing one's emotions alone to influence judgment and dictate actions, making decisions and acting in the heat of the moment is a disaster waiting to happen.
If you allow passion to jeopardize principle (Truth) you risk undermining your own foundations. The two must work in unison.

I was a kid when these movies first came out and while I found them fun, I was too young to truly appreciate the wisdom they contained. Now as an adult of 41 years and watching the way the world is going, I see the fundamental wisdom of his words and wish more people knew and understood the same.

R.I.P. Pat Morita. Thank you for your lessons.

I had the same thought as a teen I only saw the girl he liked.

The 80's and 90's were the best times.. The world was so much better as far as how we all treated one another.

Yes, I agree with you on this. I'm 42 now and I made the same realization.
