Divine
Mr & Mrs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me put your hair in braids
Let me tie your shoes
Let's play a game of charades
Chase away the blues
Let me run my hand through your hair
Let me light your cigarette
You can count on me anytime
That you need to unwind
If you get sick I'll be your cure
If you get sad I'll make you happy
If you get thirsty I'll be your wine
I've never met a girl that's so divine
Let me walk you home from school
Let me be your slave
Use me like your favorite tool
Promise I wont misbehave
Let me whisper in your ear
Let me hold your hand
You can count on me anytime
That you need to unwind
If you get sick I'll be your cure
If you get sad I'll make you happy
If you get thirsty I'll be your wine

I've never met a girl that's so divine
You're so divine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mr. and Mrs's song, Divine, describe two different scenarios where the singer experiences moments of divine intervention in their life. In the first verse, Mr. Complex talks about being visited by two X-Files characters who break into his house looking for clues, and instead just go through his rhyme books. In that moment, Mr. Complex gets angry and ends up beating them up, but then they beg him to teach them how to rhyme like him. Suddenly he realizes that one of them has a book on Ebonics, which explains why they know so much about his style. Then, he gets shot at, but miraculously, the shots end up missing. In the second verse, Mr. Complex describes a dream where he is driving down a highway and suddenly realizes he is about to crash. But right before impact, he blacks out and wakes up at home, confused and unsure how he got there. Both of these moments are seen as divine interventions, possibly influenced by a higher power.

The chorus repeats the words "divine intervention," giving the listener a clear indication of the meaning behind the lyrics. Mr. Complex seems to be grappling with questions of fate and destiny throughout the song, wondering if his success in rapping is due to divine intervention, or if it was simply a product of his hard work and natural talent.
