Ms. Dynamite was born and raised in Archway, London, England, to a Scottish mother and a Jamaican father. She grew up listening to reggae and hip hop music. Though she wanted to become a schoolteacher or social worker, her biggest aspiration was to be a musician. She is the eldest of eleven siblings, one of whom is a grime artist known as Akala.
While working at the radio station RAW FM, Ms. Dynamite was discovered by Richard Forbes at a West End club. After working briefly with the garage act So Solid Crew, she released her debut album, A Little Deeper, in 2002, which won Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize for Album of the Year for 2002.

Watch Over Them
Ms. Dynamite Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every second I feel like praying
Everywhere I turn my people dying
Brothers and sisters now listen what I'm saying
I don't really feel like writing
And I don't really feel like singing
Cause everywhere I look my people fighting
The same gunmen that cry bout suppression
Of the white man and his racist oppression
Go a church and give god his confession
Gun in his pocket and crack in his possession
Damn hypocrite don't be disillusioned
yeah life is tough but that's not no solution
You g'wan like yer brave that's an illusion
Brave man wouldn't kill his own would start a revolution
Gunman and too much drug man
What are we showing
The youts dem
We should be protecting
Instead we're destroying
Oh father watch over them
In this song, Ms. Dynamite expresses her grief and sorrow about the state of her community. She wakes up with a heavy heart, feeling like she wants to cry, and every second she feels the need to pray. Everywhere she turns, she sees people dying, which causes her to speak out to her brothers and sisters. She is not in the mood for writing or singing because she is fed up with all the violence and fighting in her community. It is sad to see that her people are fighting against each other, causing destruction and killing each other. She calls for bravery, unity, and a change in the current situation.
Ms. Dynamite notes that the same people who complain about oppression and racism from the white man can be found committing crimes or using drugs. She labels them as hypocrites. She reminds everyone that violence is not the solution to their problems because bravery should be used to fight oppression instead. She calls upon people to stop the violence, drugs, and fighting, and instead start a revolution to bring positive change to their community. The song ends with her praying for those who have been misguided so that God can guide and watch over them.
