New Years
Much the Same Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've got some rebuilding to do
Brick by brick I'll try to put
Them each back in their place
And leave no window to see through
"It's 4:30 am on a Tuesday,
It doesn't get much worse than this"
I always thought you needed
And this is the thanks I get?
Do I care to take the time
To hear an explanation
Or an unbelieved apology?
I told you from the start
There's be no manipulation
And no psychology
Did you think that you
Could get away with using me?
And that things would turn out fine?
Well I've got news for you,
We all see through your little game
And you've lost again this time
And this time I won't cry
'Cause you haven't earned it
And all your chances have been blown
And if you've treated everyone
The way you treated me
It's no wonder you're perpetually alone
I hope you learn your lesson now
But you can count me out
The song "New Years" by Much The Same tells a story of someone who has been betrayed by a friend who took advantage of their kindness. The lyrics convey a sense of disappointment and anger towards the person who has done wrong. The singer talks about how they had to tear down "masterfully constructed walls" and now have to rebuild them. This metaphor represents the emotional damage caused by the betrayal, and how it will take time to repair it. The line "Brick by brick I'll try to put them each back in their place and leave no window to see through" signifies their determination to move on and protect themselves from further hurt.
The lyrics "It's 4:30 am on a Tuesday, it doesn't get much worse than this" indicate a moment of despair or hopelessness. The singer might be in a state of exhaustion and emotional turmoil, wondering how their friend could do such a thing. They had always tried to be a good friend but did not receive the same treatment in return. The singer is no longer willing to tolerate this kind of behavior and contemplates whether to listen to the other person's explanation or apology. However, they had made it clear from the beginning that they would not accept any manipulation or psychology.
The chorus emphasizes the fact that the person has lost their chances and that the singer won't cry over them. The singer also suggests that the other person is perpetually alone because of their behavior. The closing line "I hope you learn your lesson now, but you can count me out" shows that the singer has moved on and wants nothing more to do with the person. The song speaks to anyone who has faced betrayal and reminds them that it's okay to let go of harmful people.
