Baby Please Don't Go
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, please don't go
Baby, please don't go
Baby, please don't go
Down to New Orleans, you know I love you so

Before I be your dog
Before I be your dog
Before I be your dog
I get you way'd out here, and let you walk alone

Turn your lamp down low
Turn your lamp down low
Turn your lamp down low
I beg you all night long, baby, please don't go

You know your man down gone
You know your man down gone
You know your man down gone
Down the country farm, with all the shackles on

You brought me way down here
You brought me way down here
You brought me way down here
'Bout to Rolling Forks, you treat me like a dog

Baby, please don't go
Baby, please don't go

Baby, please don't go
Down to New Orleans, I beg you all night long

Overall Meaning

Muddy Waters's "Baby Please Don't Go" is a song about a man pleading with his lover not to leave him for New Orleans. He tells her how much he loves her and how he will do anything to keep her, even if it means being treated like a dog. He asks her to turn her lamp down low and begs her all night to stay with him. The lyrics suggest that the man feels trapped and unable to escape, as though he is in chains and being forced to stay with his lover.

The repeated lines of "Baby, please don't go" and "Turn your lamp down low" emphasize the man's desperation and his desire to keep his lover with him. He tells her that he would rather be alone than be treated like a dog, but he also knows that he cannot bear to let her go. The lyrics paint a picture of a man who is deeply in love and willing to do whatever it takes to keep his lover by his side.

Overall, the song is about love, longing, and the sacrifices that people are willing to make for the ones they love. The repetition of the phrase "Baby, please don't go" captures the intense emotions that the man is feeling and creates a sense of urgency that draws the listener into the song.

This jam session is from 1981 recorded in Chicago. Muddy Waters was 68 by this time, and had been playing the guitar since around 1928. He was born in 1913. Mick Jagger was only 38 at this time. Sadly, Muddy Waters died just two years after this collaboration. 🙏

@claremontcowboy7409

@@americangiant1003 It's clearly staged/scripted - the Rolling Stones just happen to rock up, while there just happens to be a second camera crew and guitars ready to go.
