Burr Clover Blues
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, now the reason that I love
That ol' Stovall's farm so well
Yes, now the reason that I love
That ol' Stovall's farm so well
Well, you know we have plenty money
And we never be raisin' hell

Well, we raise plenty cotton
And we are booked out with the corn
Yes, we raise plenty cotton
And we are booked out with the corn

Well, you know, we have to carry the place on
Now the main boss been here and gone

Overall Meaning

In "Burr Clover Blues," Muddy Waters sings about his fondness for Stovall's farm, where he spent a significant portion of his early life working as a sharecropper. The song expresses his gratitude towards the farm and its owners for providing him and his family with steady, reliable work and a means of supporting themselves. He explains that this work has enabled him to live a comfortable life without having to engage in any immoral or criminal activities.

In the second verse, Muddy goes on to describe the various crops that they grow on the farm, particularly cotton and corn. As they make a good living from these crops, they have no need to engage in dubious activities for additional income. The line "Now the main boss been here and gone" suggests that the farm owner is currently away, leaving Muddy and the other workers to manage the crops and the farm.

Son Simms and Muddy wrote this tune together at the request of Howard Stovall, owner of the plantation where Muddy worked. In the photo taken by Alan Lomax when he recorded them in the early 1940s Simms is the one in the photo with the fiddle. Too bad it's been clipped out of the image here and other vids on YouTube. Simms and others taught Muddy guitar and Muddy was part of The Simms Four. Before Muddy played guitar, he played harp in Simms earlier band the Mississippi Cornshuckers.
