Don't Go No Farther
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You need meat, go to the market
You need bread, try the bakery
You need love, don't go no further
Just come on home to me

I got to love somebody
I got to love somebody
I got to love somebody
Somebody's gotta love me

You need grits, go to the grocery
You need fish, go to the sea
You need love, look for me, baby
And just come on home to me

I got to love somebody
I got to love somebody
I got to love somebody
Somebody's gotta love me

You need money, go to the bank dear
You need honey, look for the bees
You need love, don't go no further
Just come on home to me

I got to love somebody
I got to love somebody

I got to love somebody
Somebody's gotta love me

Overall Meaning

Muddy Waters's song Don't Go No Farther speaks about love as the most important need one could ever have. The lyrics say that if you need meat, go to the market or if you need bread, go to the bakery. But if you need love, you should not go any further from where you are at the moment because the love you need is already there. Simply come on home. The singer then goes on to specify that he has to love somebody and somebody has to love him. He further makes comparisons by saying that if you need grits, you should go to the grocery and if you need fish, you should go to the sea, but if you are in search of love, you should look no further except to come home to the one you love. He also says that if you need honey, you should look for bees and if you want money, you should go to the bank. However, when it comes to love, don't seek any further than home.

The song's lyrics teach the importance of being content with what one has and never to take love for granted. Even as we have other needs, the giver and sustainer of love is irreplaceable. The love you need might not be found out there, and you wouldn't get it no matter how much you search, but if you have it already, cherish and stick to it. The song's meaning also indicates a cry for love as the singer states that he needs somebody to love him as much as he needs to love someone. In summary, the song's lyrics suggest that love is the needed ingredient in life that should not be taken for granted or overlooked.

Well, it's certainly ONE of the greatest harmonica solos...For anyone interested, this is in the key of E flat and Little Walter is playing a Hohner 64 Chromonica, using the slide/button to achieve the unique phrases he plays here. That guy was something. Isn't Hubert Sumlin also on guitar on this record?

Muddy waters is a champion!

I know exactly why Eb - it is so Walter could play his chromatic harp in that key. It was obviously his idea! Chromatic harps in those days were only available in C, and blues players played in what they call third position - minor tonality - in D. Now: push the harp's pitch-change button in, and you're in Eb. Walter kept that button in for most of the time during his solo, but you can hear the half-tone slurs clearly that are created by letting the button out. I hope this helps!

I only know that your post made me pay more attention to the harp. I should now cos I had a buddy who had all the Marine band harps in all available keys but the chromatic was always a mystery to me. I knew about Larry Adler but never really got into it.

Exactly that

I could see how someone like Keith Richards would be into this songšŸ˜Ž

The lyrics are great, too....

This was a popular single. I still have the 45.

The C chromatic harmonica can be altered, by turning the slide-plate upside down. That way, it's in third-position Eb (dorian minor) without having to hold the slide in. Kim Wilson also does this on "In Orbit" from "Butt Rockin'" by the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

That is what threw me when I was learning the guitar part of this song. Its straight ahead Key of E style blues guitar. I invite any guitarists to correct me if I'm wrong but I see no way to play the guitar on this song with out using the open E chord. Except its not in E its in Eb. So the guitarists had to go out of their way to tune their guitar down a half a step. That seemed odd. But I'm now understanding they did it for all the right reasons: Little Walter.
