Look What You've Done
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now, look what you've done

You left me here, the lonely one
And all I could say, is look what you've done

A broken heart, a weary mind
And throw few dollars, baby, all the time
I once had a dream, but now I have none
You've taken your love and see what it done

The night bird cries, the shadow falls
Blue memories, and I recall

Your love is my life as warm as the sun
And nine years gone but see what you've done

Saw you last night, I was movin' around
With your new toys, paint the town

But it is okay, keep having your fun
Because someday, you'll pay for all you've done

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Muddy Waters's song 'Look What You've Done' tells a tale of heartbreak and loss. The singer is addressing his former lover who has left him feeling lonely and brokenhearted. He reflects on the fact that she has taken his dreams away and left him with nothing but painful memories. The longing for her love is evident in his lyrics as he compares it to the warmth of the sun, although he acknowledges that he must let her go and move on with his life. The singer observes his ex-lover's newfound pleasures and acknowledges that she will have to face the consequences someday.

The lyrics of the song are open to interpretation, but the general theme is that of love, loss, and heartache. The use of imagery in the song is notable, with the shadow falling and the night bird crying, all adding to the melancholic tone. Muddy Waters's voice is powerful and emotive, and the song's simple melody complements the lyrics and adds to the overall effect.

It is interesting to note that 'Look What You've Done' was not one of Muddy Waters's better-known songs, and it did not chart when it was released. However, over time, the song has become a blues standard and has been covered by numerous artists, including Buddy Guy, Don McLean, and Tracy Chapman. The song's enduring popularity is a testament to the universal appeal of the lyrics and the emotional resonance with listeners.

Like it? Hell, I love it. I've dug this by the Stones for decades but Muddy was the teacher on this one.

I heard this for the first time from hearing The Rolling Stones version - which is incredible - especially Brian Jones harmonica playing. But you have to love this version as well. The Stones were pupils of Muddy’s.
