Mad Love
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want you to love me, love your baby slow
I want you to love me, love your baby slow
Well, you know I want you to love me baby
Until I drop dead in front of your door

I want you to love me, love me with your own free will
I want you to love me, love me with your own free will
You know I want you to love me baby
Love me and don't get me killed

I want you to love me baby, until the house stand on my head
I want you to love me baby, until the house stand on my head

Well, you know I want you to love me baby
Till you know I wished I was dead

Overall Meaning

In Muddy Waters's song "Mad Love," the lyrics express the singer's intense desire for love from their partner. It is clear that the singer is completely consumed by their longing, as well as the hope that their partner will reciprocate their feelings. The chorus consists of the singer repeating their desire for their partner's love, but with specific requests for the way in which that love is given. In the first stanza, the singer emphasizes their desire for slow, deliberate acts of love. The second stanza then requests that their partner love them of their own free will, presumably indicating that they do not want to be loved out of obligation or pity. Finally, the third stanza intensifies the singer's desire once again, as they request to be loved to the point of physical destruction.

Overall, the song expresses the deep yearning for romantic love in both an impassioned and slightly ominous way. While the lyrics themselves are relatively simple, the repetition of the chorus and the clear desperation in Muddy Waters's vocals add to the intensity of the song's meaning.

What a stunning piece of work...How did these gentlemen produce such earthy yet restained/controlled masterpieces in the clinical conditions of the recording studio? No, cedricleecason, it isn't Big Walter. I confess that I believed that it was but back in 1993 my friend Rod Piazza laughed at me and said: "It's Little Walter! Who else?" And the authors of Little Walter's biography are clear on this matter. Close study of both Walters will convince you, I'm sure. Best wishes

Just the same old Blues who never dies Thanks partner

Little Walter on this one. I've read the the biography and can't recall the exact, however just the off-time fills that he does I think is the indicator for me...something he used to do on lots of his own tunes.

Overall I love the simplistic structure...even though there's guitar, drums, harp and piano. Genius.

My favourite Big Walter playing is on Evening Sun/Brutal Hearted Woman by Johnny Shines, Horton's own Hard-Hearted Woman and his 1954 session with Tommy Brown, all recorded at the superb Universal Studio in Chicago. As you say, The Satanas666, Walking By Myself by Jimmy Rogers is a great record that features Horton, also its reverse side If It Ain't Me.

I'll go with Big Walter Horton on blues harp here Sirius.   I'll check my best of MW record liner notes.  The solo he does in the middle of this blues tune blows me away every time I hear it.   OMG.
