Oh Yeah
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh yeah, someday I'm goin' to catch you soon
Oh yeah, someday I'm goin' to catch you soon
Look you in the mornin'
I'm gonna catch you in the afternoon

This gonna take my heart, must be made of steel
Just stay out all night, boy
You know, how to make her feel about

Oh yeah, someday I'm goin' to catch you soon
Look you in the mornin'
I'm gonna catch you in the afternoon

She want me do like Daniel, sleep in the lion den
I asked her where she's goin', boy
She tell me where she been

Oh yeah, someday I'm goin' to catch you soon
Look you in the mornin'
I'm gonna catch you in the afternoon
Well alright, well alright

I get to tell 'em 'bout the way
She'll break down and cry, I don't love you, Marie
[Incomprehensible]

Oh yeah, someday I'm goin' to catch you soon

Look you in the mornin'
I'm gonna catch you in the afternoon

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muddy Waters's "Oh Yeah" seem to be about a struggle between two lovers. The singer is expressing his determination to catch the object of his affection, who seems to be a bit of a wild one. The repetition of the phrase "oh yeah" suggests the singer's confidence and belief that he will indeed catch this person soon. He plans to catch her in the morning, in the afternoon, and he's not going to give up. He acknowledges that it won't be easy, but he insists that his heart is made of steel and he's willing to do whatever it takes to make her his own.

The second half of the song has some interesting lines that add to the overall story. The woman in question wants the singer to "do like Daniel sleep in the lion den" which may be a reference to a biblical story in which Daniel is thrown into a den of lions but survives due to his faith in God. The woman may be testing the singer's faith or bravery in some way, as if she wants to make sure he's really committed to her. In the final lines, the singer describes how he will "tell 'em 'bout the way she'll break down and cry" suggesting that he's had enough of her games and is ready to assert himself in the relationship.
