You Can
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I had a pretty little girl
I lose my baby, ain't that sad?
Oh, you know, once I had a pretty little girl
I lose my baby, ain't that sad?
Well, you know, you can't spend what you ain't got
You can't lose what you ain't never had

I had money in the bank
I got busted, boys, ain't that sad?
Oh, you know, I had some money in the bank
I got busted, baby, ain't that bad?
Well, you know, you can't spend what you ain't got
You can't lose what you ain't never had

I had a sweet little home
It got burned down, boys, ain't that bad?
Oh, you know, was my own fault
People, they just said

Well, you know, you can't spend what you ain't got
You can't lose what you ain't never had

Overall Meaning

The song "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" by Muddy Waters is a commentary on the unpredictability of life and how things can easily slip away. The lyrics describe various losses that the singer has experienced, including losing a pretty girl, losing money in the bank, and losing a home that was burned down. However, the refrain throughout the song is the same: "you can't lose what you ain't never had."

This refrain serves as a poignant reminder that some things in life are simply out of our control. No one can lose something they never had in the first place, which means that we shouldn't take anything for granted. The song also suggests that perhaps we shouldn't place too much value on material possessions or relationships, as these things can be easily lost or taken away. Ultimately, the message of the song is one of humility and acceptance - accepting that life is unpredictable and that we must cherish what we have while we have it.

Overall, "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" is a beautifully crafted song that captures the essence of the human experience. It is both melancholy and hopeful, reminding us that while we may experience loss and hardship in life, we can always find strength in the knowledge that we never truly lose what we never had.

PASSAGEM

It's Muddy wisdom, sort of Blues philosopher for the 20thC onward....he tells you what the "Intellectuals" try to teach but he delivers his message in clear -concise-no-nonsense manner . Wise wise MAN!
