You Need Love
Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've got yearnin' and I got burnin'
Baby, you look so, ohh, sweet and cunning
Baby, way down inside, woman you need love

Woman you need love, you've got to have some love
I'm gonna give you some love, I know you need love
Just gotta have love, gotta have some love
You make me feel so good, you make me feel all right
You make me feel so good, ohh, you make me feel all right
You make me feel so good, you make me feel all right

You're so nice, you're so nice
You're so nice, you're so nice
You're so nice, you're so nice
You're so nice, you're so nice

You're frettin' and I'm petting
A lot of good things, ohh, you ain't getting
Baby, way down inside, woman you need love

I know you need love, you just to have some love

I ain't foolin', you need schoolin'
Baby, you know you need coolin'
Woman, way down inside

Woman you need love, you've got to have some love

Ooh, you gotta have some love
Ooh, you gotta have some love

Overall Meaning

The song "You Need Love" by Muddy Waters is a blues classic that expresses frustration with a partner who is neglectful and unappreciative. The lyrics suggest that the singer's partner doesn't cook for him or treat him well, and that he's had enough of her low-down ways. The repetition of the statement "you gonna need my help" is an indication that the singer is not to be taken for granted, and that he is ready to move on if necessary.

The song is notable for its powerful vocals and the simple, driving rhythm of the guitar and drums. Muddy Waters' voice is gritty and full of emotion, conveying the sense of frustration and anger that underlies the lyrics. The song is also notable for its use of call-and-response, with the singer and the band trading off lines, increasing the tension and energy of the song.

One interesting aspect of this song is that it served as the basis for Led Zeppelin's hit "Whole Lotta Love." Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were fans of blues music and had heard Muddy Waters' song, but decided to make it their own by adding additional lyrics and a different arrangement. The result was a rock classic that paid tribute to its blues roots while creating something new and exciting.

Im sorry but you are completely incorrect. For a start, Robert Plant received no credit for any songs on the first album. He was still under contract to CBS and was not allowed to receive credit even for lyrics he wrote.

Willie Dixon was 100% fully credited for two songs on the first album right from the beginning. Babe Im Gonna Leave You was credited as traditional. Go look yourself at the very first pressings of the back cover of Led Zeppelin's first album, from January 1969.
It clearly says:

Babe Im Gonna Leave You (traditional, arr by Jimmy Page, Superhype ASCAP).

You Shook Me (by Willie Dixon, Arc, BMI).

I Can't Quit You Baby (by Willie Dixon, Conrad, BMI)

Its there for all to see. Willie Dixon never sued Led Zeppelin for anything on the first album because he was fully credited. Dixon sued Zeppelin for Whole Lotta Love and Bring it on Home on Led Zeppelin II.

Dixon had been getting royalties from Zeppelins first album from way back in 1969.

Damn I never knew Page and Plant invented a time machine in '69 to go back to '62, wrote this song for Willie Dixon then traveled back to cover their own song. That's genius!

@Oly1y Only the four lines of lyrics are the same but the music is totally different. If you think otherwise, you're what is called tone deaf.

I think it was Marc Bolan who did it and then went back to record his own Jeepster
