Muddy Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hmm
You know you shook me, baby
You shook me all night long
You know you shook me, baby
You shook me all night long
Whoa, you kept on shakin' me, darlin'
Oh, you messed up my happy home

You know you move me baby
Just like a hurricane
You know you move me baby
Just like a hurricane
Oh, you know you move me, darlin'
Just like a earthquake move the land

Oh, sometimes I wonder
What my poor wife and child gon' do
Oh, sometimes I wonde
What my poor wife and child gon' do
Oh, you know you made me mistreat them, darlin'
Oh, I'm madly in love with you

You know you shook me, baby
You shook me all night long
Hmm
You shook me all night long

Overall Meaning

Muddy Water's "You Shook Me" is a powerful blues song about the overwhelming effects of love. The lyrics emphasize the physical and emotional impact that his lover has on him. He compares her to natural disasters such as a hurricane and an earthquake, emphasizing the intensity of her effect on him. The phrase "you shook me" is repeated throughout the chorus, highlighting the consistency of her effects on him.

In the second verse, Muddy Waters expresses concern about the impact of his relationship on his family. He admits that his love for his lover has caused him to mistreat his wife and child. Despite this, he is still madly in love with his lover and unable to resist her.

Beyond the lyrics, there is a powerful and driving instrumental accompaniment which adds to the intensity of the song. The guitar playing and harmonica solos create a sense of urgency and feeling of being swept away by the force of the music. The song features a classic call and response style, characteristic of traditional blues music.

Love the music of Muddy Waters 💙💙🎤🎸💙🌟💙🌟💙🌟💙🌟💙🌟

luv basses

As colorful and powerful as young white Brits remanufactured hit songs like this one, there’s just nothing like the original ones. Years back when discovered Zeppelin, I’d read the credits of the songs! Names like Willie Dixon and Muddy’s were there. I think EVERYONE needs to go back and unearth theses originals. When I did, I then realized why young Robert just went loopy over a guy like Willie. Not only could he shout the blues out with menacing regard, his bass playing was just as good if not better! I mean the guy was the whole package. Im combing through these artists that reigned way before my time. Im a 1967 baby so I came along a little late but owe it to myself to go back research these blues masters. It’s quite refreshing to listen to.
