Evil
Muddy Waters Blues Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went through the jungle
I met a king snake
He said excuse me Mister
I think I made a mistake
I looked at the lion
He bowed his head
I looked at the tiger
And he fell dead

Oh so evil
Evil, as anybody can be
You know I'm the hoochie coochie man
Don't nobody mess with me

I met an elephant
It was big as a house
I made him reduce
So he looked like a mouse
I met a [Incomprehensible] bear
And he was so big
I made him lose his hair
And now he needs a wig

Oh so evil
Evil, as anybody can be
I'm so darn gone evil boy
Don't nobody mess with me

I met a rattlesnake
He thought he was smart
He was double dealing [Incomprehensible] ace card
He sneaked up and bit me
Stretched out and died
So when you see me coming
You better run in high

Oh so evil
Evil, as anybody can be

You know I'm a nature born lover
Don't nobody mess with me

Overall Meaning

In the song "Evil," Muddy Waters sings about his power and dominance over both the animal kingdom and anyone who crosses him. He starts off with a story about meeting a king snake in the jungle who thought he had made a mistake, but it turns out that Muddy is in control. He then boasts about his ability to make an elephant shrink down to the size of a mouse, and make a bear lose all its hair. In the final verse, he meets a rattlesnake who bites him, but ends up dying from the encounter. Muddy uses these stories to demonstrate how nobody should mess with him because he is the "hoochie coochie man," a natural born lover with evil power.

By using animal imagery in this song, Muddy Waters connects himself to the natural world while also highlighting his superior power over it. The way that he brags about his conquests of these animals, reducing them to insignificant sizes or stripping them of their hair, shows his disregard for their lives and reinforces his own domination. The use of the phrase "evil, as anybody can be" further reinforces this idea, as if to say that his power is so great that it can only be seen as evil.

Overall, "Evil" is a song that shows Muddy Waters' confidence and power, but also highlights his cruel disregard for the natural world. The use of animal imagery reinforces his dominance and adds to the song's overall message of not messing with someone as powerful as Muddy.
