Little Lion Man
Mumford/Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Weep for yourself, my man,
You'll never be what is in your heart
Weep little lion man,
You're not as brave as you were at the start
Rate yourself and rake yourself,
Take all the courage you have left
Wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head
But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?
Didn't I, my dear?

Tremble for yourself, my man,
You know that you have seen this all before
Tremble little lion man,
You'll never settle any of your scores
Your grace is wasted in your face,
Your boldness stands alone among the wreck
Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?
Didn't I, my dear?

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn't I, my dear?

But it was not your fault but mine
And it was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time

Didn't I, my dear?
Didn't I, my dear?

Overall Meaning

The song "Little Lion Man" by Mumford & Sons is ultimately about taking responsibility for one's own mistakes and failures. The lyrics begin with the singer, who is referred to as "my man," weeping and lamenting that he will never be what is in his heart. This is followed by the chorus, in which "little lion man" is urged to weep and acknowledge that he is not as brave as he once was. The next verse continues this theme, telling "my man" to learn from his mistakes instead of wasting his time fixing the problems he has created in his own head.

However, the song takes a turn in the chorus when the singer takes responsibility for his actions, admitting that "it was not your fault but mine" and that he "really fucked it up this time." The repetition of this refrain drives home the message that we must accept our role in our own problems and take responsibility for our mistakes.

Overall, "Little Lion Man" is a powerful and introspective song about the importance of owning up to our own shortcomings and learning from our mistakes, rather than running away from them.

@LionTroy

This song saved my life.

I left the love of my life because I didn't think I was enough for her. I left her in another country. I came back... absolutely nothing for me here. I sat in the city, no food or money, just waiting to die.

A few days passed and this this song came on. A construction crew just a door down had this playing.

I cried. Cried unlike I ever have or would again. It reached me like no song ever could.

I got up. I came home. I could move on.

Thank you. I think you saved my life.

I will never forget the first time I heard this song, I was getting into my truck after being told by doctors that I had miscarried, the radio turned on and the first thing I heard was "It's not your fault but mine...It was your heart on the line"...every time I hear this song I think of my sweet angel baby, and I wish I could know her.
