I Will Wait
Mumford Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like a stone
And I fell heavy into your arms
These days of dust
Which we've known
Will blow away with this new sun
But I'll kneel down
And I'll kneel down
Know my ground
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
So break my step
And relent
You forgave and I won't forget
Know what we've seen
And him with less
Now in some way
Shake the excess
'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
Now I'll be bold
As well as strong
And use my head alongside my heart
So take my flesh
And fix my eyes
A tethered mind free from the lies
And I'll kneel down
Wait for now
I'll kneel down
Know my ground
Raise my hands
Paint my spirit gold
And bow my head
Keep my heart slow
'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
Mumford and Sons' song "I Will Wait" is generally interpreted to be about love and commitment, likely inspired by a romantic relationship. The first verse describes a return home to a loved one after a difficult time ("like a stone") and the sense of comfort and security found in their embrace. The second verse seems to touch on forgiveness and moving forward, possibly from mistakes made in the relationship. The chorus repeats the simple yet powerful refrain of "I will wait for you," expressing loyalty and patience.
The third verse brings a sense of determination and growth, as the singer commits to being "bold" and using both their head and heart in their relationship. The final lines of the song feature a call to spiritual awakening, with the singer seeking a greater understanding and connection with the divine as they continue to wait for their loved one.
Overall, "I Will Wait" is a song about the beauty and complexity of love, and the importance of commitment, forgiveness, and growth within a relationship.

Well I came home
I returned to you
Like a stone
I came back to you feeling heavy and unfeeling
And I fell heavy into your arms
I wanted to be comforted by you
These days of dust
Our troubled times
Which we've known
We have experienced before
Will blow away with this new sun
We can start anew and move forward
But I'll kneel down
I will humble myself
Wait for now
Be patient with me
And I'll kneel down
I will show my devotion
Know my ground
Understand where I stand in this relationship
And I will wait, I will wait for you
I am committed to waiting for you
So break my step
Challenge me and make me grow
And relent
Forgive me when I make mistakes
You forgave and I won't forget
I am grateful for your forgiveness
Know what we've seen
Acknowledge what we've experienced together
And him with less
Be content with what we have, not what others possess
Now in some way
In our own unique way
Shake the excess
Let go of what we don't need, and focus on what is important
'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
I am steadfast in my commitment to wait for you
Now I'll be bold
I will act with bravery and courage
As well as strong
I will be both physically and emotionally strong
And use my head alongside my heart
I will make decisions with both logic and emotion
So take my flesh
Accept all of me, both good and bad
And fix my eyes
Help me to see clearly
A tethered mind free from the lies
A stable and truthful mindset
Raise my hands
Show my devotion outwardly
Paint my spirit gold
Make my soul pure and valuable
And bow my head
Show my humility
Keep my heart slow
Stay calm and focused on what is important
'Cause I will wait, I will wait for you
My commitment to wait for you remains strong
And I will wait, I will wait for you
I will continue to wait for you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
I will be patient and steadfast in my commitment to you
And I will wait, I will wait for you
Waiting for you is worth it to me

When I listen to this song, my heart aches.
My Beloved Baby Brother died 1/4/2020.
He was a Soldier, a career Army man.
He died when he was only 47 years old.
Jamie was deployed 3 times.
Twice to Iraq and once, the last time, to Afghanistan.
He was a Combat Engineer who cleared explosives, IED'S, Landmines etc. Think the movie, "The Hurt Locker".
He was Awarded the Army Metal with Valor, multiple Purple Hearts, and many others.
When I heard this song, I thought of my brother.
After reading others comments, I see how other people relate to this song in so many different ways.
As for me, I thought about when my brother was deployed to Iraq for the first time.
He left behind his wife Anita, a Special Needs Teacher & their two little boys who were only 3 & 5 years old.
The 1st time he was Deployed, we weren't allowed to see him off.
So, the day he was deploy to Iraq, one of the soldiers came to his home & picked him up.
He, his wife and 2 little boys stood on the front porch and said their tearful goodbye's.
It was late October in New England, & it was cold outside.
Well after the truck had driven out of sight, Anita went to bring the boys inside.
Connor, who was 5yo went in the house.
Ryan who was only 3yo, wouldn't go in.
Anita knelt down to ask him why he didn't go inside.
With a serious, thoughtful expression in his big brown eyes and tear stained face.
He looked up at his Mom & said, "I'm going to stay right here and wait for Dad to come home."
Gently, Anita said, "Ryan, remember Dad talked about how he was going to be away with his Army Family for a while, then he'll come home?"
"We made the calender with Dad, to mark off the days till he comes home."
In his serious 3 year old "grown up voice", he said, "Yes, but I'm still going to stay right here and wait for Dad to come home."
"Dad will see me & he won't forget where we live!".
Talk about heartbreaking! Military Spouses don't get the recognition they deserve!!
Neither does the less than 1% of the eligible US population that serve in the Military!!
At night, I look up at the stars and I talk to my brother!
Sometimes I text him, or I'll call & sing him "Happy Birthday" or just to chat.
It's been 2 years now and Miraculously, even though the phone is not registered or hooked up, my texts and calls still go thru!!
I like to think my brother makes it happen!!
