Thistle %26 Weeds
Mumford %26 Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spare me your judgements and spare me your dreams
'Cause recently mine have been tearing my seams
I sit alone in this winter clarity which clouds my mind

Alone in the wind and the rain you left me
It's getting dark, darling, too dark to see
And I'm on my knees and your faith in shreds, it seems
Corrupted by the simple sniff of riches blown
I know you have felt much more love than you've shown
And I'm on my knees and the water creeps to my chest

But plant your hope with good seeds
Don't cover yourself with thistle and weeds
Rain down, rain down on me

Look over your hills and be still
The sky above us shoots to kill
Rain down, rain down on me

And I will hold on, I will hold on hope
Oh I will hold on, I will hold on hope
Oh I will hold on, I will hold on hope
I will hold on, I will hold on hope
And I will hold on, I will hold on

I begged you to hear me, there's more than flesh and bones
Let the dead bury their dead, they will come out in droves
Take the spade from my hands and fill in the holes you've made

But plant your hope with good seeds

Don't cover yourself with thistle and weeds
Rain down, rain down on me

Overall Meaning

Mumford & Sons' Thistle & Weeds is a haunting and emotional song that speaks to themes of loss, regret, and the struggle to hold onto hope in the midst of darkness. In the first verse, the singer pleads with someone to spare them their dreams and judgements, as they have recently been struggling with their own and feel broken as a result. They are alone in a "winter clarity" that clouds their mind, overwhelmed by the weight of their thoughts and emotions.

The second verse shifts to memories of someone who left the singer alone in the wind and rain, surrounded by darkness. Their faith has been shattered, and they are consumed by the desire for riches and material goods. The singer acknowledges that this person has likely experienced more love than they have shown, but still feels lost and alone. They are on their knees as the water creeps up to their chest, threatening to engulf them.

The chorus urges the listener to plant their hope with good seeds, to resist the temptation to cover themselves with thistle and weeds (symbols of negative thoughts and emotions). The singer begs for rain in a symbolic plea for healing and renewal. The final verse addresses someone directly, perhaps the one who left the singer alone in the rain. The singer pleads with them to see beyond the physical and material world, to let go of old wounds and fill in the holes that have been left behind.

Overall, Thistle & Weeds is a powerful song that speaks to universal human experiences of loss, regret, and the struggle to hold onto hope in the midst of darkness. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of forgiveness and healing.

This song makes me think of a person slowly and painfully being turned into a monster and mourning their loss of humanity and lucidity.

Tonight I'm playing in a two year long d&d campaign. Tonight is the last night, the end of what seems like an era. We are finishing the rise of Tiamat. The final battle. My character is the only one in the group who hasn't died, and playing the original character that I started out with from the very beginning. This song just captures the feeling and moments in the heat of battle.
