42
Mumford & Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where do I turn to when there's no choice to make?
And how do I presume when there's so much at stake?
I was so sure of it all

But what if I need you in my darkest hour?
And what if it turns out there is no other?
If this is our last hope
We would see a sign, oh
We would see a sign

Well I've been running from the ashes we left
Forgiveness fends for itself but how can I forget
When there's a stain on it all

But what if I need you in my darkest hour?
And what if it turns out there is no other?
We had it all
If this is our time now
We wanna see a sign, oh
We would see a sign

So give us a sign

I need some guiding light
Children of darkness, oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mumford & Sons's song 42 are about a person who is facing a dilemma, and they are unsure of what to do. The first verse asks where to turn when there is no choice to make, and how to make a decision when the stakes are high. The singer was formerly certain of everything, but now feels unsure. In the chorus, the singer wonders what will happen if they need someone to help them in their worst moments and if there is no one there. It represents the fear of being alone in troubled times and the realization that one can't always handle everything on their own.

The second verse presents a theme of forgiveness and forgetting, as the singer discusses stains and trying to move past them. Despite asking for help in the chorus, there is still a sense of resilience in the singer, as they continue to run forward. Again, the chorus is repeated, emphasizing the need for guidance and a sign. Finally, the bridge of the song calls out to the "children of darkness" asking for them to receive a sign. This represents the idea that all people face struggles and hard times, and the desire to overcome them unites everyone.

"I was so sure of it all" breaks me every time. not to mention "I've been running from the ashes we left" ( 1:21 for when I go back to it lmaoo) gives me running away from past abusers with your best friend,,, it's just a powerful song. I love this so much. "what if I need you in my darkest hour, and what if it turns out there is no other?" is definitely relatable, as I cut off my toxic best friend who would manipulate me lmao. I love this song sm.
