To Darkness/Kripa
Mumford & Sons Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Take my eye
and my whole my heart
in your hands
in your hands

and board the yacht
as it departs
leave me on the shore
but I will hunt no more

Hold my sin above my head
and take me home instead
take me home instead

I will not speak of your sin
there is a way out for him
the mirror shows that
your values are ocean

The door, my heart was floored
I knew my weakness, oh hold,
my hand can sign me not to darkness

you know, my heart was floored

I knew my weakness, oh hold,
my hand can sign me not to darkness

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mumford & Sons's song To Darkness/Kripa invoke feelings of vulnerability and the desire for redemption. The first verse includes the lines "Take my eye, and my whole my heart, in your hands, in your hands," which suggest a willingness to be completely vulnerable to someone. The singer is willing to give up everything to be with their lover, but they know they cannot always have them, as they say, "leave me on the shore, but I will hunt no more." This line could represent the idea of finally being at peace with oneself and no longer searching for validation or love outside of oneself.

The second verse is about sin and redemption. The lines "Hold my sin above my head and take me home instead" suggest a desire to be forgiven for one's actions and to be accepted for who they are. The singer is willing to confront their own sins and face the consequences of their actions, but they also acknowledge that there is a way out for them. The line "the mirror shows that your values are ocean" could mean that the singer realizes that their values run deep like the ocean and that they are willing to embrace them fully.

The final verse involves a sense of hopelessness and strength combined. The line "my hand can sign me not to darkness" suggests that the singer acknowledges their own weaknesses and vulnerabilities but will not let them take over their life. They are determined to move towards the light and not be consumed by the darkness. Overall, the song's lyrics are about confronting one's vulnerabilities and acknowledging them, while striving towards redemption and hope.
