Anything But Me
Muna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're gonna say that I'm on a high horse
I think that my horse is regular-sized
Did you ever think maybe
You're on a pony
Going in circles on a carousel ride?
You're gonna say I asked for the moon
I think that it's you with your head in the sky
All that I wanted was somebody honest
Living for more than their next good time

You say that you wanna change
Well, I hope you get everything you want
Everything you want
You say that you need relief
Well, I hope you get everything you need
Everything but me
'Cause I don't wanna stick around trying to work it out
When everything feels wrong
Everything feels wrong
But it's all love and it's no regrets
You can call me if there's anything you need
Anything, anything but

Me, me yeah
Me, me yeah
Me, me yeah
Anything you need
Anything but me

Go ahead and hate me as long as you need to
Go ahead and break me a piece of your mind
Say I always had one foot out
Well, baby, I got two now
Good thing I've never been afraid of goodbye

You say that you wanna change
Well, I hope you get everything you want
Everything you want
You say that you need relief
Well, I hope you get everything you need
Everything but me
'Cause I don't wanna stick around trying to work it out
When everything feels wrong
Everything feels wrong
But it's all love and it's no regrets
You can call me if there's anything you need
Anything, anything but

Me, me yeah
Me, me yeah
Me, me yeah
Anything you need
Anything but me

And sure, it's not all so black and white
Sure, I'm gonna cry
For the love we couldn't keep
But I would rather lose you
Than who I'm meant to be
So you can have anything but

Me, yeah (me)
Can have anything but (me)
Me, yeah (me)
You can have anything but
Me, yeah (me)

Can have Anything but (me)
Me, me yeah (me)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muna’s song Anything But Me appear to be a frank expression of the artist’s desire to move on from a troubling relationship. At the beginning of the song, the artist appears to confront an accusation from the estranged lover that she is acting superior or bossy towards them. However, she points out that she is simply acting normally, while accusing her lover of being the one on a high horse. The artist then goes on to explain that she wants someone who is honest and serious about their lives, not just someone out for a good time.

The artist seems to have already accepted that the relationship will not work. She encourages her lover to go and look for everything they want, but makes it clear that they will not find her. She then acknowledges that the breakup is not all black and white, expressing her feelings of loss through crying. However, she is ultimately willing to face the pain of heartbreak and move on by ending the relationship.

Overall, the song seems to be a powerful expression of the sentiment that sometimes the end is necessary, even when it is painful. The artist shows a great deal of emotional maturity and strength in her decision to leave a relationship that she feels is not right for her.

MUNA and HAIM are 2 of the most talented bands making music today. Their capabilities seem endless! Love them so much! 😍❤️

Avant Gardener

You're right that MUNA and HAIM are super talented but MUNA aren't a girl band. Not everyone in the band is a woman.

Matilda Litsey

@Avant Gardener Does that matter? Didn't think so, but you're gonna say it does, so talking is pointless.

Avant Gardener

@Matilda Litsey huh? The original comment used to say '2 of the most talented girl bands' but it was edited to remove the word girl after I left my comment. So my comment does matter enough for the original commenter to edit their comment. I think it's important to be respectful of people's identities and MUNA are not a band of girls and have explicitly said they don't want to be described as a girl band.

@Avant Gardener ehhh girl enough

@Kuzma Minin and it means wish or desire in Arabic

I mean they did go on the Ellen show after it had already became known that the show created a discriminatory and transphobic environment when Nikki Tutorials had her guest appearance, so I def wouldn’t say they can do no wrong.
