@Matt Williams that's not what happened in my case and my life was destroyed because of it.

I was fully cleared, there wasn't even a reason to even suspect Munchausen by proxy according to a well known neurologist at Toronto sick kids who poured through all of my son's and my medical records.

I actually told those who accused me that they were welcome to assess me and speak with my doctors. They did not.

My point, people don't always follow protocol.

I know of others who have the same medical conditions as their offspring and they were accused falsely as well. Same hospital.

I can't name the neurologist who cleared me due to ongoing legal reasons so please don't ask.

I actually experienced that psychosomatic thing you mentioned a few years ago...

It was following a pleurodesis (surgery to prevent a collapsed lung following a spontaneous pneumothorax) and while I was in the hospital I fell out of rhythm with my anxiety medication. When I was released I got back on it, and within a couple of days my body just felt like it went haywire. I lost a good deal of sensation in my extremities, my legs felt as if I was actively working them out even when lying down, my forearms burned and fingers were somewhat clumsy, I lost my appetite and in general just felt like hell. Additionally, my mental state was just a disaster.

This went on for weeks, I spent a lot of money visiting neurologists and such (the wait time is usually like a month), and to my shock after undergoing a number of painful tests they determined my nervous system was mostly fine and my blood results didn't indicate anything.

While I still showed a number of detectable physical symptoms, the most severe ones didn't have a clear cause. Over the following months I gradually improved until, after about a half year of the ordeal, I genuinely just felt fine again.

It was clearly "in my head", then, but that does not mean it was without cause. My doctors all suggested a combination of serious surgery with sudden switches both off of anxiety medication and back onto them could have thrown off my nervous system despite the medicine being fairly benign on average, something that apparently isn't particularly rare.

It definitely changed my outlook on psychosomatic symptoms. Before, I'd assumed it was just people manifesting them because they wanted to, but often they truly are feeling and experiencing those things and would desperately like to feel better.

I'm a paramedic and we treated a munchausen for about 2 years. She was a wreck. It started when Medicaid stopped paying for one of her psychiatric medications. She went off the deep end. Over 800 911 calls in 2 years, two psych invols, banned from two emergency rooms, one for stealing insulin from and injecting herself in the parking lot to induce a seizure, the other for trying to stab a social worker with scissors. She would hurt herself or lie about insane injuries that were obviously false, just for medical attention, multiple times a day.

After about 450 trips to the hospital and over a million bucks in ambulance and hospital bills, her psychiatrist finally convinced the state to start paying for the drug again. It was like a light switch. I still see her at the grocery store occasionally, and she is 100% better. Overnight. She hasn't called 911 in about 3 years.

I'm not sure if this counts but, my former best friend would try to (for lack of a better description) 'steal the show' from me when I was having fertility issues. Not many people knew about it outside of immediately family and a friend or two. I had 4 miscarriages (and a healthy birth) and after each one she would publicly announce that she was 'pregnant', or confide in me that she just recently had an abortion. I was actually in labor with my daughter after years of trying and several miscarriages... I texted her that they were doing a C-section after 10 days of labor - I was literally lying in my hospital bed emotional and crying. She chose this moment to facetime me to tell me about the 'abortion' she was going to have the next day. I thought she was just calling to cheer me up.

She also got engaged at my wedding (announcing it in the microphone right after she gave a short speech), AND very loudly broke up with her fiance (only to get back with him the next day) during a dinner at a very nice restaurant for my husband's promotion.

Most recently, 2 years ago my father died of terminal cancer. I live half way across the world and took my 3 year old daughter to see grandpa one last time before he passed away. Hardest thing I've ever been through. He passed a month later. After I returned back from the funeral in the US, a few days later she called me and said how jealous she was and how unfair it was that she has 2 kids so she couldn't manage to have an overseas vacation, LIKE I JUST DID. Yeah, the moment she called my father's funeral a 'vacation' I was done. I should have been done long before that.

I don't know what illness that is, beyond maybe narcissistic cunt.

My cousin is like this. She ruined my childhood, early teens, every birthdays i've ever had. She had to have everything i had, every clothes i wore, to the point that she married someone who was born just 15 minutes before me. Whenever my maternal grandparents would care for me, she'd throw a fit and demand they care for her as well. But they saw right through her and never obliged. My dad too, hated this as well, and he complained and so he was a "villain" in my mom's eyes. Yet my mom was perfectly happy in destroying my life. This cousin wanted my "life" which is sad cuz now the tables have turned and while i've become dirt poor, she slept her way into a millionaire's family.

I think my mom may have munchausens... and she has done similar things such as showing up to my rehearsal dinner for my wedding engaged with a ring on her finger. Or when I change my hair, she will change hers to look like mine. If the main motive for munchausens is attention, those attention seeking behaviors could extend into other areas of life as well. I’m a nurse in a children’s hospital and I have seen a few cases of munchausen by proxy and he is correct every case we came across it was a woman. It is verrrry rare though. Usually some tell-tale signs are that the person keeps changing hospitals as to keep medical staff that are beginning to catch wise from pursuing action. Usually they are very pro-invasive and will sometimes even push for the installation of medical devices that have very little necessity. Often times when they come in they will describe symptoms that can not be reproduced or if they are present they clear up very soon after admission. It can take a very long time to recognize munchausen by proxy. Because most assume the best of parents and don’t assume that they are poisoning or hurting their child. It’s only after a long period of time, and watching behavior patterns that you start to suspect it, if you are ever treating a child that you suspect of munchausen by proxy, it is very important that you let your superiors know about your suspicions and give the reasons why. That way the proper authorities can be notified. Also you want to make sure that everything the child ingest (medications, food and beverages, etc) comes from the hospital. And nothing is taken from the home supply. Also if the abiding parent is staying with the child (most of the time rights are not taken from the parent until a substantial amount of proof can be given, and this is very hard to prove) they must be monitored very closely as to ensure that they are not giving the child anything or harming them in other ways (changing settings in medical devices, applying known allergens, messing with IV lines) and the most important thing is documentation. It takes a lot of proof to prove munchausen by proxy. Every time you see a suspect behavior you need to document it. Every conversation where the parent says something odd you document it. I have seen people get away with child abuse for far to long because their wasn’t enough documented evidence to pursue anything. And the nature of the medical profession is constantly changing personnel. A patient may have a different nurse care for them every day if the week. And recognizing patterns and catching abuse of this nature is hard when you constantly have new sets of eyes on the patient if you are not looking for it.

You also need to write about the other side of this. Parents of special needs children who have similar medical issues themselves can be falsely accused of Munchausen by proxy. I'm one of those parents. A resident jumped the gun and I was falsely accused. This had and still has serious effects on my life.
I was cleared properly by a neurologist of high standing who took the proper time and looked through all medical documents of both my son and I. Not a trace of this type of behaviour was to be found. She in fact recommended neurogenetic testing. My son and I are both high functioning autistics with ADHD and Tourettes.

The damage is done, however. It was made public and spread. Our lives will never be the same.

Not once was I properly assessed by those who accused me. I will be suing for the destruction they caused my family.

I remember seeing a few things about it on YouTube with real examples. What sucks is when someone has a slight disability, but the caregivers blow it out of proportion and make it sound like a horrible thing and make an otherwise easy to live with condition (like learning disability, or autism) into a physical real problem. I got to a point recently where I convinced myself I must have Munchausen’s because I lack understanding of my chronic illness. I noticed that my symptoms were worse on busier days at work, when I’m stressed/anxious, and whenever I’d go longer than a week without a major symptom, I’d think it was suspicious.
This video has cleared it up for me. I’m just experiencing normal symptoms! I think it’s hard to accept the fact that you’re chronically ill so I was turning to some other solution. Makes me wonder what it’s like to fake a chronic illness, I can’t imagine getting all the sympathy without any of the symptoms .

My step mother in law has this and it's insane. I could go on and on telling the most absurd stories of the stunts she's pulled but I aint got the time to write it, and you aint got the time to read it!

My question is, how can you help? How can you get this person the help they need? How do you even go about bringing it up?

When I was a teenager, I started with symptoms that the doctors diagnosed as psychosomatic. They ignored my pneumonia until I had to be put on an oxygen machine etc because of it. I actually started to believe them too until I met a doctor who found the cause of my symptoms. It had never been psychosomatic, it had been Ehlers danlos syndrome the entire time. Now I have dislocating knees and hips etc. The misdiagnosis actually caused me to develop severe depression.
Just because you don't know the cause, doesn't mean it's in the mind. A large amount of EDS sufferers have similar stories to mine as well.

I experienced something similar. Growing up, my mom took me to dr after dr to find out what was wrong. So many told her it was all in my head and that I was making it up for sympathy. My mom knew better and kept trying. FINALLY in my THIRTIES I was diagnosed with both fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. The RA being something I was born with and had been suffering symptoms since I was 6 yrs old. It was actually right there in the blood tests they never considered doing. I was treated horribly by doctors my whole life until I finally convinced one to do the blood test. I've been believed ever since, but I still get scared to tell the dr about something wrong for fear of again being told I'm imagining it.

@tellthemborissentyou I've been diagnosed with POTS and we suspect a joint issue, possible EDS. I also experience peripheral nerve pain, and for years I was told by doctors that it was just stress, and to not worry. I realized this year that I had a bone that went out of place and pinched a nerve causing some of the pain, but also that I think my challenges are more complex than I thought. I'm hoping physio can help, but for now, I wear compression socks and gloves, and I'm looking into hip compression to help me walk better. For a diagnosis the wait lists are 1-4 years depending on severity, so I have to rely on what works, and who will take me seriously.

I have miserable hips, and I'm looking into Ehler's Danlos as an option, but the diagnosis is 4 years. At least my occupational therapist was able to get me a referral to physio, because my parent's thought I was faking. I've also been diagnosed with ADHD, POTS, and MCS/IEI, but MCS has widely been regarded as a psychosomatic thing, but I can't fake that Tide Pods and perfume (among other things) give me a rash and terrible allergy-like things. My grandmother had that too.

I was lucky, after working it out myself, collecting data and finding a doctor who listened to me and referred me to the correct departments, my major issues are dislocations, holes in my kneecaps, bowel issues and POTS but I’m now studying to go into medicine while I’m well enough to do so. I’ve now got a fantastic doctor who has really helped me in getting to be as well as I am now. The fatigue is hard and so is the pain.
It just takes 1 doctor who listens but the issue ive faced personally is finding a doctor who listened. If a 14 year old girl can work it out, my question is, why couldn’t the doctors?

Yes, in my area, to get diagnosis for a lot of chronic things, the wait list is 4 years. And I get accused of faking it, because I was forced to hide it as a child, plus, some conditions get worse over time without treatment (like my joint instability). While some of these can be self induced (a lot of ballerinas struggle with joints too), mine has been present from childhood, and my parents refused to admit anything was wrong. It's almost the opposite of what was talked about here, where people refused to help someone for a legit thing, rather than help someone for a fake thing.

@McKenna Wangen As someone who suffers from mental illness I like to think of it as "Your illness can explain your actions but not forgive them." If I hurt someone because of a suicide attempt etc. I can understand that my mental illness caused that but I am still on the hook to apologize and only the person I hurt can choose whether to forgive me. I can not blame someone I hurt for turning away from me because of mental illness. Same for people with addiction, theres a reason the 12 step program including apologizing. They don't say "you're an addict so what you did on drugs/alchohol was okay" they say "you're an addict so you have to work hard not to give in to your addiction and make ammends for what you did."

People who blame their bad behavior on mental illness (muchassens or otherwise) make all mentally ill people look bad and play into societies stereotypes.

(Also most mentally ill people I know take responsibility and the ones that don't are abusive a-holes. I don't think they don't deserve treatment, but I do think they don't deserve defense for their actions.)

My grandfather has this. I never lived with him so I never saw the full extent of it, but he faked extreme gastrointestinal issues in order to shirk the draft. An eternity later he's still deathly ill except at this point, it's real. He fucked his stomach lining up so badly by dry heaving almost every day, and now apparently it's upgraded to throwing up blood. Problem is - people with Munchausen sometimes start believing they aren't faking anything. I've always been sick, I was never faking. And he does - he's fully convinced he has stomach cancer and he's stopped going to doctors because they tell him otherwise.

Munchausen is dangerous as hell. Possibly one of the most dangerous mental disorders out there.

Tazhie Nunurbusinezz; BTW gypsy DID try to escape by walking out of the house one time in secret but her mom caught her and that’s when she threatened to smash her fingers if she ever tried to do it again. I think that part was on the Dr. Phil special about it. That’s where I first heard of this case. And it’s not like buses are free. I remember missing my schoolbus one day and when I asked the city bus driver who came down the same street how much it costed to ride to the mall across from my school, he said “45”. I thought he meant $45 not 45¢. I was about to walk back home but he said it was cents so I paid out of my lunch money. That’s something else home schoolers can’t exactly do.

She could have tried calling the police or, since she was obviously well aware she could walk, she could've used her legs to walk out of that house & onto a bus. Tazhie Nunurbusinezz; it was a pretty grim outlook for gypsy. Mom threatened to smash all her fingers with a hammer if she ever ran away again and with gypsy getting well into adulthood she had reason to fear being murdered by the so called medicine being given by her naive Hoodwinked doctors. Another surgery was scheduled soon where those idiots would do a procedure that was very painful and would make gypsy vulnerable to the possibly of her mother sneaking poison into the feeding tube or whatever it was. I can give a doctor respect when he knows what he is doing to be sure it doesn't cause harm but only one doctor did anything different than following along in typical fashion blindly thinking "mom is always right and always loves her kids". Even that guy gave up.
I can't denigrate gypsy for not doing the best thing a clairvoyant savant could do with hindsight and time on his side. She had chemically induced mental retardation and was in fear for her life from valid threats all the fault of her momster. Even her response of doing nothing during the murder was trained in her by her mother. It is karma, raw and deserved. I just can't understand how any one could dare to blame gypsy for anything she did to her captor to ensure her escape. It's like "how dare a kidnap victim damage the nice ropes used to tie him?" Deedee was a monster and deserved to die. Harambe got shot just to be sure he wouldn't act like one. No one was volunteering to shoot Deedee so gypsy had to find someone or do it herself.

Munchausen's/ Factitious disorder (FD) is a psychiatric disorder in which sufferers intentionally fabricate physical or psychological symptoms in order to assume the role of the patient, without any obvious gain. - DSM - 5.

People asking for donations to help with false illness do not have Munchausen's, they are Malingering. This is a similar but separate disorder, the difference being that there is motivation for faking symptoms other than assuming the sick role/ role of care-giver. Having said that, I am not an expert, these matters are far from simple and it may be possible to have both disorders at the same time.

1. It isn't attempted murder, because the caregiver doesn't want the person to die.
2. Medical abuse and child abuse describe the action perfectly, but Munchausen by proxy describes what goes on in the person's head. So I still see the need for the term.
3. It's not that they are "too chicken" to get themselves sick. The child specifically being sick is the key characteristic. Munchausen mothers typically hate their child, and present deep emotional disorders and severely compromised interpersonal skills. Regular munchausen patients have normal levels of empathy, so getting someone sick for attention doesn't even cross their mind.

I first learned about Munchausen in anatomy class because it was around the beginning of May and most of the class was out everyday for ap tests, so the teacher put on a movie about forensic science

Basically, in one of the cases, this lady (who had munchausen by proxy) had about nine children die, for all the cause of death was infant death syndrome, and they figured that there was some death gene in the family or something, despite the fact that one of the children was much older than the rest--and more importanly ADOPTED. Eventually, people started to get suspicious, since the children had symptoms of suffocation, unlike fds where they just randomly stop breathing and die, and they figured out that the mother was smothering her children for the sympathy. She was diagnosed with munchausens and sent to jail for infanticide

Not sure where this fits but I know someone who was given a severe head injury during a fight by her parents when she was a toddler (she was still functional but a special ed student throu school). It wasn't till nearly 40 years later that someone familiar with the situation spilled the beans. Meanwhile mother and daughter were always chasing one disease after another (Lupus was a favorite) and other medical problems, making it look like she was just a sickly person. All this was to cover up the original cause of mental handicap. Oh, there was sometimes a story that "the doctor hit her head on the table when she was born".

The definition you give here of malingering is incredibly narrow; while "addicts looking to score" (I love ya man, but you talk like my 5th-grade DARE constable sometimes) surely make up a generous chunk of malingerers, people also do it for monetary gain either through lawsuit or through having paid time off work for compensation, or to get out of a military draft, or even as an attempt at a mitigating factor if the malingerer is facing criminal charges of some sort.

For you to define malingering solely as an illicit means to obtain prescription drugs is either very ill-informed, or just disingenuous. On a side note however, "malinger," "malingering" and especially "malingerer" are such very fun words to say and type, so thank you for this opportunity.

Same here. Symptoms were dismissed for years until it was almost too late. It turns out I got Lyme Disease and by the time they realized what it was I had a severe infection in my blood, heart, brain, and basically all my organs were shutting down. My parents were told I likely only had up to a couple days to live if I made it through that night. When I made it through those critical few days, they said I should be on hospice. Thankfully it has been a few years and I'm doing somewhat better (at that time I couldn't move at all except my eyes and slight finger movements when I wasn't too tired and was on oxygen). Before they figured out what was going on, they said my mom was making me sick which was definitely not true. It was so sad they blamed my mom when it turns out it was something completely different going on.

I know I don't have this disorder (thank the Gods), but fairly recently, I had been having what I called "spot seizures" that manifested as twitches in my jaw, tongue, and lips. See, last year, I actually did get REALLY sick because of a very large blood clot in my brain (don't ask me how it got there: I have VERY complicated biology, having been born with several disabilities), but around the anniversary of it this year, I started having a lot of the same symptoms that had led up to last year, namely the seizures. But they weren't REAL, see. My mind, not my physical brain, was doing it to me because of the stress of the anniversary, and my legitimate terror of going back into hospital for the same issue. Three months: I was in hospital for three months straight, lost a good fifteen pounds, have very few memories of probably the first two or three weeks (I was on a LOT of drugs) and, immediately afterwards, broke up with my fiancee because he just couldn't deal. So yeah, I had a shit year. However, once I realized what was going on, and upon my neurologist telling me I didn't have any new brain damage, I stopped having the mind-induced seizures. Sometimes, if you have a decent constitution in general, and thankfully I do, just knowing the cause of a thing can help you feel better about it, and, in my case, knowing what it was helped to stop it. So, I think that would qualify as psychosomatic, but I managed to cut it out.

My doctor thought I was a hypochondriac/munchausen before doing any tests on me. I was in pain for 6 years and the doctor kicked me out the office cuz she thought I’m just being over dramatic. I switched a few doctors until I finally had a MRI approved. Turns out, I had a slipped disc that was pressing on my nerves. I’ve been doubted for so long. I wish people would of been less cynical. My mother medically abuse me and my sister, never even heard of this before, might be that, all I know is that she gave us meds and made us go to doctors when there was nothing actually wrong with us.
Now my sister has bipolar and bpd.
When the symptoms started in our teens my mother would constantly be there for my sister, pretending to be the perfect mum.
While I could be left on my own to look after myself for days/ weeks on end (I'd frequently stay at friends houses for days and she either didn't realise or didn't care enough to ask where I was)
It made me feel like I couldn't tell anyone what was going on because, who would believe that the wonder mum was actually hurting us and letting others hurt us.
Suffice to say I worked a lot and the second I finished high school I moved country and got myself away from that.
Cheers knowing better for directing me here from another vid, maybe that's what my mother was doing idk, and I'm in a good place now. But regardless it's interesting to learn about.

my dad was dependant on sleeping pills for over 40 years and when his doctor suddenly said that she can't prescribe him any for some time, he started munchausen, unfortunately he consumed so many pain killers while muchausening that he got stomach ulcers from it and also cancer (we didnt knew at the time), so when he got his sleeping pills again after about 1,5 months he was totally happy for about 2 weeks until the stomach ulcers and cancer forced him into hospital (we, our family thought that he was munchausening again and just told the doctors to give him placebos), but then the doctors did a scan of him and taht is when they found the ulcers and the cancer. the doctors called us and we drove to our father, i have never seen him so defeated, but also calm in a weird way, he was very accepting of the fact that he would soon die and 3 weeks later he did, sadly he was alone the night that his heart stopped working. but if there was something to learn of the story, it is to never underestimate the power of chemicals, no matter if it is pain killers or sugar, you don't feel what it does to your body, until it is too late.

I know someone with this and I've tried to tell their relatives, some agree with me, and one passes if off. I've tried to directly confront the person...oh my...a torrent of emotional blackmail and threats resulted, it was followed up by a variety of serious medical issues and text messages from their 'friends' being sent to me I guess in an effort to elicit attention and make their various ailments seem real, when it was obviously written by him. Then he got caught out faking a heart attack, I think to get sympathy from an ex. I've given up but the craziness continues...broken bones, seizures, serious spinal injury and operations...it goes on. It's exhausting and pisses me off to think they think I am so stupid.

My grandmother had the same symptoms. Always complaining that her kidneys were failing. Hospitalised on several occasions and then discharged. Then the abuse started when I was about 8. She deliberately made me into a fat freak (I weighed 140 lb at 10 years old) to make me unattractive so I could be her "carer". She destroyed my mums life and was working on me. I started to distance myself, lost weight and got a life. She lived till she was 84 with "kidney failure". Always the centre of attention. Terrible, life destroying illness

My grandma definitely has this. When she was little, her mum was really ill and died early in her childhood. From that point on, she was always 'ill' and requiring constant attention and care from somebody. Every time, it was something new, and if you got ill, she would suddenly find herself getting more sick than you so she'd get more attention. She'd be calling 999 at every possible opportunity to get herself in hospital, even if it's something they can't really do anything for, like all the aches and pains that come with being old. Nowadays though, she's actually ill, but the sympathy's gone and while people know she's ill, they've since stopped caring.

People accused me of that, but I really have invisible disabilities, and it's hard. I have seen people who would fake stuff for attention, especially if they had a condition already that would cause a minor injury to be potentially a bad thing (like blood that doesn't clot as fast), and it was hard to tell what was exaggerated.

My mom had a form of this, she craved doctors attention. She said when I was a baby she'd cover me until my temperature went up, then run me to the doctor. After my sister was born she had enough ear problems she got the attention she wanted. There were 5 of us and we are all effected in different ways. She never drugged us or anything like that but we were in the dr office at least once a week.

What about Munchausen's by Proxy: Mental Illness. I swear to god my mother had this, or seriously acute Narcissism, she's nearly ruined my life because of it, thanks to her I have nearly zero knowlage of how things work, and serious anxiety and panic attacks because I don't know how to present as well under stress, nor how to get help when people threaten or abuse me. I'm dependent on the mental health system, not because I can't work or function, but because I can't get anyone to listen when it's caregivers fail.
I'm in an area where abuse of clients is rampent. We are constantly threatened with anything from eviction, starvation, over medication, to unnesisary hospitalization simply to get compliance to almost arbitrary behaviors or commands. Anything from take a shower twice a day or more, to stretch you're money farther than it can humanly be stretched, to clean this appartment to the point it looks unlived in, keep it that way, and you're forbidden from actually moving your stuff into it are all thing that have been demanded of me. Oh lets not forget the woman who wanted me to pretend to be more stupid than I was and wanted me to follow incremental commands over and over then refused the notion that she was verbally abusive and controlling.
Yet when I reach out I'm told its my fault, just obey, and I'm blamed when as I get more and more desperate I show the symptoms I was taught and abused into believing were real. It seems there's no escape. That deserves a video.

What would be the proper term for paranoia of having a disease? Because I have convinced myself that I was dying multiple times and am terrified of being around people that are sick even if it isn’t contagious.

I have ocd and one of the ways it manifests is in severe hypochondria. I had to go to the er because I couldn’t stop having panic attacks. I was positive I had hiv even though there was no earthly way I would.

The people around them don't experience the illness in person, only seeing outward symptoms (anemia, jaunduce, etc.), and changes in behavior. Then theay end up (without malice) gaslighting the ill person with comparisons to their own illness, such as comparing the headache someone gets from watching tv to a full migraine the ill person has to deal with.

I don't know of any cases of Munchausen by Pet - if there were any, I'm sure they would just call it "by Proxy." I'm sure it does happen though, which is sad.

I'm chronically ill, have been since my teen years to varying degrees, and have always been (I guess I'm a bit of an asshole now that I look at it) of the opinion that if someone wants to be sick so badly they'll hurt themselves they're welcome to mine because I don't want it. But then I watched this and realized it can be caused by growing up or spending time around someone with an illness. And now I can't help but worry even more about my young daughter.

I've been in and out of the hospital for years, and I've always worried that it might mess her up in some way. Oh boy, if I didn't have concerns before, I do now.

Every paramedic I've known or trained has seen issues like this first hand. While the internet can be a valuable source of medical information, like all information it can be ill-used (see what I did here?). Unfortunately for anyone who creates a video such as this, it is difficult to present this information without being judgemental. Even the narrowest brush can paint both sides of a thin line. I think that this might be a topic that some day in the future you will look back at and want to revisit or redo.

what I find so weird is that any time I feel symptoms due to like. Being sick. My brain immediately thinks I have Munchausen, which is weird because that is not how this works at all, and often the symptoms of Actually Being Sick are like manageable with over the counter medication or like drinking some water and taking a nap, but yet my brain insists that I am pathologically faking it for attention and should simply Stop It as I try to avoid all attention bc I don't want to be touched or try to hold a conversation when I feel like shit and should be taking a nap. Wild stuff, annoying to deal with

No, but I sure as hell thought of the documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, which is about this if you haven't seen it. Talk about screwed up. FASCINATING look at the human condition, but it won't leave you in a good place emotionally. Highly recommended, as it is very well done, but not for like a "date night" situation. (Even explains how the mom was able to get away with it for so long and get treatments that were completely medically unnecessary for her daughter.)

The other day, a guy at my work feigned a heart attack to get out of work.

I work at a manufacturing plant for circuit boards. Sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, cyanide, and a laundry list of other hazardous chemicals are used every single day. The powerpoint that runs on loop in the break room lists the number of days since the last OSHA recordable (work-related major accident). A few months back, a guy went to the hospital with cyanide poisoning.

So basically, my work has emergency services on speed dial. Of all the places to feign an injury, there're very few places worse than my work. Yeah, they'll believe you, but you'll also get caught in a matter of hours.

Between the time I saw the ambulances arrive and the time I heard about it being faked, maybe two hours passed.

I knew of a case of Munchausen by proxy with a female nurse who was treating her chronically ill daughter. As soon as the daughter was removed from her care the child had a miraculous recovery. Truly a scary case...

I think its important to include the statistics about just how rare this actually is. About 1% is a generous estimate. In contrast 50% of people actually have some sort of real chronic illness at least in Australia and 20% have one that qualifies as a disability. So if someone tells you they have a long term health issue, they are probably telling the truth. In addition, myself and almost every other chronically ill person I know has been accused by doctors and the public of faling our illness. This drives some to suicide and burdens many others with mental illness. For example, most people with IBS, Fibro, ME, or other rare autoimmune disorders have anxiety that perhaps we are just faking our symptoms. This is despite the fact that increasingly more and more scientific studies do find neurochemical, FMRI, and physical differences. PCOS where uterine tissue grows inside the body where it shouldn't and then falls out and collects around the body causing extreme pain, cramping, iron deficiency and infertilty was believes for a long time to just be women faking an overly bad period. This discrimination to disbelieve patients does not affect all equally and poor, POC, and female patients are disproportionately disbelieved. See John Oliver's piece on Medical Bias to learn more. Mental health patients and patients are also disproportionately accused, especially by friends and family. As I know @KnowingBetter has a military background it is important to note that military PTSD is one of the disorders to suffer the least disbelief in public because military trauma is the traditionally studies traumatic trigger for PTSD. It has taken the medical community much longer to fully recognize domestic violence, parental abuse, and medical trauma as other causes of PTSD, and god forbid you had some other random traumatic event that has never been studied. Yes, fakers exist. But what is worse? Letting a couple people abuse the system or subjecting all chronically ill and disabled people to harmful sterotyping? Would you feel worse because a relative fooled you into caring for them? Or for not supporting a family member in the most difficult time of their life? Remember, accusing someone of faking is 50x more likely to end in the later. So next time someone tells you they have been struggling with mental health, chronic illness or disability and you think about accusing them of faking - You know better.

You're so right people always tell me I just want attention, luckily I never really tried to kill myself but other in my situation maybe would, telling someone they are faking is on of the worst things you could do, Btw the people who told me I just want attention were fricking adults and I'm 13, I just hate these people

Both of my grandmothers were sick while I grew up, but the worst I did was limp cause my ankle 'hurt'. I still have that habit when I go up stairs, where like. One foot is flat, and the other I move on lightly
