Hold Me
Muriel Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold me, hold me
Never let me go
Until you've told me, told me
What I want to know
And just hold me, hold me
Make me tell you I'm in love with you
(Hold me tight, never let me go)
Thrill me, thrill me
Walk me down the lane where shadows will be, will be
Hiding lovers just the same as we'll be, we'll be
When you make me tell you I love you
(Will you take me in your arms)
They told me, "Be sensible with your new love
Don't be fooled thinking this is the last you'll find"
But they never stood in the dark with you, love
When you take me in your arms
and drive me slowly out of my mind
Kiss me, kiss me, and when you do
I know that you will miss me, miss me

If we ever say adieu, so kiss me, kiss me
Make me tell you I'm in love with you

Overall Meaning

In this song, Muriel Smith expresses her desire to be held, thrilled, and kissed by her lover. She asks him to never let her go until he tells her what she wants to know, which is likely the depth of his feelings for her. Smith wants her lover to hold her tightly, so she can confess her love for him. She wants him to thrill her by taking her down the same lane where other lovers have been, and make her tell him that she loves him.

The second verse of the song reveals that Smith's friends and family have cautioned her to be sensible with her new love and not to be fooled into thinking that he is the last man she will ever love. However, Smith disregards this advice because her lover has the power to drive her out of her mind with his kisses. She wants him to kiss her and make her tell him that she loves him because if they ever say goodbye, she knows that he will miss her.

Overall, the song is a passionate plea from Smith to her lover to hold, thrill, and kiss her and to make her confess her love for him. It describes the intense feelings that come with falling in love and the desire to be close to someone.

She was my next door neighbor in the 70s. You could hear her warming up from half a block away. She was a proud but slightly bitter person with a lot of class

I worked with Muriel in the original London production of South Pacific, and you could not have met a more kind and wonderful person.

I found out about Miss Smith just now by the Google's Doodle 6/17/2022, highlight of singer Amanda Aldridge and finding out about Miss Muriel. What a beautiful woman she was. 🙏🏽

As a teenage boy growing up in Europe I purchased the only UK hit Ms.Smith had.  "Hold me etc." Her voice was superb, her presence stunning. She ranks among the best black female singers of her time.

I have this song on a 78rpm that was my mother’s. Being a little younger that you Robert (born in 59) I grew up listening to my parents (mainly mother’s) record collection, many of which were 78’s and Muriel’s was a favourite. Such a shame her career was relatively short. She was a stunning woman with a fabulous voice. I find it difficult to believe that ‘Hold me....’ was her only hit.

I was familiar with her work before meeting her at VUU in early 1971. She performed in Richmond in an opera before moving there. I especially loved her dubbed voice in South Pacific 58' singing Bali Ha. REST IN GODS ETERNAL GRACE

I had the wonderful opportunity to study with Muriel Smith while a music student at VUU in the 1970's. I studied voice with her and what a wonderful experience it was. She died in 1985 in Richmond, Virginia. Oh what a voice and presence she had!! I miss her dearly.
