Abigails Song
Murray Gold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're alone, silence is all you see
When you're alone, silence is all you'll be
Give me your hand and come to me

When you are here, music is all around
When you are near, music is all around
Open your eyes, don't make a sound
Let in the shadow, let in the shadow
Let in the light of your bright shadow

Let in the shadow, let in the shadow
Let in the light of your bright shadow

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Abigail’s Song by Murray Gold evoke feelings of isolation and loneliness. The repetition of “When you’re alone, silence is all you see/When you’re alone, silence is all you’ll be” paints a picture of someone feeling trapped in their own silence. However, when the singer implores “Give me your hand and come to me,” there is a glimmer of hope, that by reaching out to another person they can break free from their solitude.

The second half of the song is an invitation to let in the shadows, to embrace the darkness that may scare us. “Let in the shadow” is a call to accept all parts of ourselves, even the ones we don’t like or want to hide. And when we do this, we also let in “the light of your bright shadow,” meaning we can let our inner light shine even in the darkest parts of ourselves. The repeated chorus of “Let in the shadow” is a reminder that it’s okay to be vulnerable, to face our fears, and that in doing so we will find strength and beauty.

Overall, Abigail’s Song encourages listeners to reach out to others for help and to embrace their whole selves, even the parts they may find difficult to accept.

This is simply amazing. I was nearly crying by the end. Honesty, A Christmas Carol was one of the best Christmas episodes ever. So deep, well thought out and moving.

+Natfan There are SO many good christmas episodes (of course there's also crap like The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe...) but to be honest.. this one might just be the best one of them all ^^

I love this song because it really captures all of the feelings of Christmastime. It's sad, beautiful, ethereal, and makes you feel like there is something bigger than you out there. Every time I listen to it, I imagine that I'm walking down a quiet street on a snowy night, like a Christmas card.

Can I print that out and frame it, along with the Spotify code for this song?
