As Lonely As You
Murray McLauchlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think of your room
I think of you there
I think of you draging you body upstairs
With your bed and your chair
And your stale perfume
I never knew anybody
As lonely as you
Your lovers leave
Before it's daylight
They want it for fun
You want it for life
And you get so angry
If they tell you the truth
I never knew anybody
As lonely as you

In my mind your face disappears
But I still see your eyes
They look like they had heard too many lies
They never seem to look straight into mine
They had nothin' left to lose by wastin' time

I can't stand to see you
I can't look when you cry
I can't help you no how
I'm too selfish to try
I wish there was somethin'
Somebody could do

I never knew anybody
As lonely as you

Overall Meaning

Murray McLauchlan’s song “As Lonely As You” is a poignant depiction of a woman’s struggle with loneliness. The song begins with the singer thinking about the woman’s living space, picturing her dragging herself upstairs. This imagery sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics, hinting at the woman’s struggle to navigate through her own life. The singer then reflects on the woman’s pursuit of love, noting that although she wants a committed relationship, she often finds herself with partners who are only interested in fleeting intimacy. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the woman is angry and frustrated with this cycle, often lashing out at those who are honest with her.

The second verse describes the woman’s physical appearance, painting a picture of someone who has been through a lot. Her eyes are described as having “heard too many lies” and no longer looking directly into the singer’s. Even though he may want to help her, the singer admits that he is too selfish to try. The chorus repeats the refrain “I never knew anybody as lonely as you”, emphasizing the central theme of the song. The final line, “I wish there was something somebody could do”, captures the helplessness felt by the singer and the woman he is singing about.

This song immediately stopped me in my tracks..it tells the story of my Mom (she died in 2013) from alcohol addiction. It may as well have followed her life for the last 15 years or so.

I want to thank you for posting something that is both sad, and a memorial to someone that I loved more than words can say.

Simple, melodic, classic song with raw emotion. A real gem.
