Supermassive Black Hole
Muse/Florio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ooh baby, don't you know I suffer?
Ooh baby, can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?

Ooh
You set my soul alight
Ooh
You set my soul alight

Glaciers melting in the dead of night (ooh)
And the superstars sucked into the super massive (you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the (you set my soul)

I thought I was a fool for no one
Ooh baby, I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
And how long before you tell the truth?

Ooh
You set my soul alight
Ooh
You set my soul alight

Glaciers melting in the dead of night (ooh)
And the superstars sucked into the super massive (you set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the (you set my soul)

Super massive black hole
Super massive black hole
Super massive black hole

Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the super massive
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the super massive

Glaciers melting in the dead of night (ooh)
And the superstars sucked into the (you set my soul alight)

Super massive black hole
Super massive black hole

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" seem to be about a person being lured into a relationship under false pretenses, falling deeply in love with someone who ultimately turns out to be superficial and dishonest. The lyrics say, "You caught me under false pretenses, how long before you let me go? I thought I was a fool for no one, ooh baby, I'm a fool for you. You're the queen of the superficial, and how long before you tell the truth?" The metaphor of a supermassive black hole is used to compare this person to something enormous and all-consuming, much like a black hole that sucks everything into its vortex. The lyrics say, "Glaciers melting in the dead of night, and the superstars sucked into the supermassive...Super massive black hole."

The chorus, "Ooh, you set my soul alight" could be interpreted as the intense passion and desire that the singer feels for this person, despite the inevitable pain and suffering that they will experience. There is a sense of both pleasure and pain throughout the song - the moans that the singer references in the first verse could be interpreted as both sexual pleasure and emotional pain.

Overall, the lyrics appear to be a cautionary tale about falling for someone who is not trustworthy or genuine, and the price that one pays for being drawn into their orbit.
