Starlight
Muse/Matthew Bellamy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Far away
This ship is takin' me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

The starlight
I will be chasing a starlight
Until the end of my life
I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms

My life
You electrify my life
Let's conspire to ignite
All the souls that would die just to feel alive

I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

And our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
And our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold you in my arms

Far away
This ship has taken me far away
Far away from the memories
Of the people who care if I live or die

And I'll never let you go
If you promise not to fade away
Never fade away

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations, yeah
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hold you in my arms

I just wanted to hold you in my arms
I just wanted to hold

Overall Meaning

In "Starlight," Matthew Bellamy expresses his desire to escape from his past memories and start anew. He wants to leave behind the people who do not care if he lives or dies, and chase after a brighter future. The lyrics "Far away, this ship is taking me far away," elude to the image of a ship or spaceship taking him far away from the troubles of his past. He is chasing starlight, a metaphor for his dreams and aspirations. However, he begins to question whether the pursuit of his dreams is worth it anymore. The lyrics "I don't know if it's worth it anymore" express his growing sense of doubt.

The chorus of the song expresses Bellamy's love and need for his significant other. He wants to hold her in his arms, and she electrifies his life. He then invites her to conspire with him to ignite the souls of those who long to feel alive but are trapped in mundane lives.

The bridge of the song then brings the listener back to the idea of escaping. "And our hopes and expectations, black holes and revelations" suggests that sometimes the pursuit of our hopes and dreams can lead us into unknown and sometimes dangerous places. However, as the song comes to a close, Bellamy reassures his significant other that he will not let her go if she promises not to fade away.

Matt Bellamy is the greatest musician the UK has produced in the past 30/40 years

Steven Wilson would like a word with you.

@pite9 he’s an extremely gifted musician, no doubt about that. Might be more proficient than Thom at both guitar and piano. But Thom is miles ahead in terms of creativity and songwriting in general.

In short, they’re both amazing for different reasons.

@Mookie Stewart Yeah Coldplay and Muse saw they had huge commercial potential and just went that route. In my opinion Muse sold out with Neutron Star Collision for Twilight and never looked back 🥲.

Mookie Stewart

@s4mcote yeah after black holes and revelations they went way more to the electronic side of things and I don’t listen to muse to hear fucking synth and electric drums lol. Coldplay did the same thing after their first 3 albums as well. Like I get it you want to stay relevant but you’re completely isolating your original fanbase for this shit. It really turns me off of a band

s4mcote

@Mookie Stewart I agree, their first albums are amazing! They lost me after The Resistance, though. Feels like they keep reusing the same rehashed formula because $$$. A Moon Shaped Pool is one of the best Radiohead albums in my opinion and it’s the latest in Radiohead’s discography, so I’m still very excited to hear their new music if it ever comes out. I’ll always love and respect Muse, they’re great musicians and have lots of memorable songs and albums, but their music isn’t exciting to me anymore. Radiohead as a band is miles ahead for me! 🙃

My god, please do more Muse! They are by my favorite band and the reason I started to learn guitar, piano, bass, recording, etc..just music in general.

Glad you're finding the videos helpful. I always love an opportunity to do Matt's stuff

This makes me think of another UK singer who is immensely unique - Jon Higgs of the band Everything Everything - really bright falsetto with very fast lyrical phrases constantly jumping around the octaves - check out No Reptiles by them - it’s incredibly unique and under appreciated
