Aftermath
Muse Lyrics

War is all around
I'm growing tired to fighting
I've been drained and I can't hide it
But I have strength for you, you're all that's real anymore
I am coming home now, I need your comfort

From this moment
From this moment
You will never be alone
We're bound together
Now and forever
The loneliness has gone

States are crumbling, and walls are rising high again
It's no place for the faint hearted
But my heart is strong 'cause now I know where I belong
It's you and I against the world
And we are free

From this moment
From this moment
You will never be alone
We're bound together
Now and forever
The loneliness has gone

We've gone against the tide
All we have is each other now
I am coming home now
I need your comfort

From this moment
From this moment
You will never be alone
We're bound together
Now and forever
The loneliness has gone

From this moment
From this moment
You will never be alone
We're bound together
Now and forever
The loneliness has gone

From this moment
From this moment
You will never be alone
We're bound together
Now and forever
The loneliness has gone

We're bound together

Now and forever
The loneliness has gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muse's "Aftermath" express a strong sense of love and partnership amidst the chaos of war and destruction. The singer, who appears to be a soldier, is exhausted and drained from the fighting that surrounds them. However, they find solace in the presence of their loved one, who gives them strength and comfort. The idea of being "bound together" conveys a deep commitment and devotion to each other, even in the face of adversity.

The opening line "War is all around" sets the tone for the theme of the song. The use of the word "growing" implies that the singer's fatigue is increasing over time, and they cannot keep up the fight alone. The reference to "states crumbling, and walls rising high again" adds a sense of political tumult, perhaps suggesting that the world as they know it is falling apart. Yet, through all of this, the singer is able to find a sense of purpose and belonging with their loved one.

The repetition of the line "From this moment" emphasizes the stability and permanence of the relationship. The use of the word "forever" and the idea of being "bound together" suggest that the singer has found a sense of home in their partner's love. The final line, "We're bound together, now and forever, the loneliness has gone," is a powerful conclusion to the song, conveying a sense of hope and comfort despite the darkness and turmoil of the world around them.

Yep, the really messed up part of it all. No one takes anything with them when they die, not even their birthday suit. So the answer to "what is the reasoning behind war." is there is absolutely no reason for it. Its part of the reason I believe there is a God, otherwise we would have all wiped ourselves out of existence by now with that level of stupidity.

All the fighting over something NO ONE is taking with them and never belonged to them to begin with. Any and all claims to land, air and sea are all temporary. We truly own nothing, which then brings the song "explorers" to mind. "Endless Rules" to something that NO ONE has ever ruled. Seems smart lol.

IMO contentment is what I think is the most important thing, because its what leads to happiness. We must first be content with the world we live in, to truly be happy. Sadly there are far too many people who exist who think inside the box and will not allow another person to be happy because they want what you have but is so hard to obtain, contentment with the hand we were dealt.

One of the best quotes I have ever seen is, "the world is equally unfair to everyone, so therefore it is fair." Everything is a systematic infinite loop. The atmosphere makes Earth an ecosystem, the reason an ecosystem fails is because its balanced and some idiot does something to unbalance that system and by its very nature it tries to again reach an equilibrium with the parent system, the Earth. Its really why Chaos theory exists and both parts of it are correct and proven, there is a butterfly effect and always "out of chaos comes order."

Thats another reason I believe in God, its all too systematic to happen randomly or naturally. It speaks more to intelligent design than against it. lol

@OffsetSolidmusic

Am I the only one who think that Muse's albums and songs tell one big long story? Probably not, but I just wanted to get this theory out there:

EDIT: Holy shit you guys are awesome. This comment now has over 100 replies and over 600 upvotes. Thank you all so much! I never thought this would get so much attention. I seriously wrote this off the top of my head in like 10 minutes. Not well-thought out at all! So please keep that in mind

So first there was Showbiz: Pretty normal, some sad love songs (Unintended), but already there are some hints in the name, Unintended, that saw something happened that wasn't supposed to. Then, there was some crazy girl (Sunburn), who, obviously went crazy, and she probably sent things into motion. (I'm not all to familiar with the other songs on Showbiz, but just roll with me, here).

Then there was Origin of Symmetry: The name "New Born" already sounds like something new has been created (yes , I am aware that in the song they're talking about an actual new born child). After the crazy girl did something, some people just went into absolute happiness (Bliss and Feeling Good), probably because she was tricking them into thinking she was good. And we learned and made plans to go to space (Space Dementia), and some people started to fear that this crazy girl, who maybe started some kind of revolution, would turn the population into an assimilated robot-like collective (Plug In Baby), and then, mass killings were conducted (Citizen Erased). Things weren't looking good, and it was obvious now that the crazy girl was, in fact, crazy.

Next, in Absolution, even the name of the album hints that this revolution thing is absolutely going to happen. People were fearing even as far as an apocalypse (Apocalypse Please), and people started to go crazy (Hysteria), and crazy girl started kidnapping people, and her hostages took a liking to her (Stockholm Syndrome), to help her take over. Then the government got involved, but they already new that time was running out (Time is Running Out, obviously). They didn't know what to do, so they told everyone that it was okay, but secretly, is was not, not at all (Ruled by Secrecy). And, when everyone found out, they got really mad (Fury).

Then, we finally went to space, in Black Holes and Revelations, I guess. We found a lot of things, like Starlight, and Supermassive Black Holes, and to help fight against the crazy girl, we made exo-suits for people to fight (Exo-Politics). We also found new technologies and more people to help us (Knights of Cydonia)

And then, we started our Resistance against the crazy girl. There was an Uprising from both crazy girl and the government. We also worked on more exo-technology (Exogenesis: Symphony). But, some people realised that it wasn't good for humans (Unnatural Selection)

Then the government created some sort of 2nd Law to help us out. They were in Supremacy, above everyone else. Even more people started to go crazy and such and join crazy girl (Madness and Panic Station). Pretty soon, there were riots and anarchy everywhere and people had to survive (Survival), but then, one stepped up and lead the rest of not-crazy people left (Follow Me). This newly formed group explored to find things to help them (Explorers). The government, although in pieces, realised now, that the population was Unsustainable, so they made their own Isolated System to survive.

Then, the new group, with their new leader, made a sort of military, but even they all went sort of crazy with their leader, as he was very strict (Psycho). And soon, they all escaped from him (The Handler). And then, crazy girl made Drones to help capture the few left people who weren't on her side (Reapers). With these drones, she captured some of the non-crazy people, and during the capture, they noticed that they weren't just crazy, they were literally Dead Inside. One of the few left people followed one of the drones back to crazy girl, and they captured her, and everything was set back to normal. Or so it seemed. The government came out of hiding, and decided to make clones of the crazy girl, as she had led such an amazing revolution, they needed more to help lead the country. But soon, she figured out, and she ran away (Mercy). She went into complete Revolt against the government, and there was one last war (The Globalist). And then, this is the Aftermath. This is what happened after the war. One lone solider brought everyone back together.

Or, I might be completely wrong, and maybe this is just a really great, diverse band, making really great music.

Anyway, if you made it this far, thanks for reading. I'm sorry for my bad grammar in some places, but sometimes things are hard to word.

This song is criminally underrated. I see it often labelled as one of the worst off of drones but in my opinion it is one of the best and one of their most beautiful songs overall.

@tanklessbunny3992

I think it is labeled that because the album is mostly fast pasted heavy rock songs and then this very slow sad song is kinda just in there, however I agree with you I love this song

@aldeayeah

It's middle of the pack for me - I like it better than defector, revolt and dead inside, about as much as globalist or mercy, and less than psycho, reapers or handler.

@rokaanalzeer

@@tanklessbunny3992 I think after being hit with a train of heavy metal songs it’s nice to go into something more softer
