Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aping my soul
You stole my overture
Trapped in God's program
Oh I can't escape

who are we?
where are we?
when are we?
why are we?
who are we?
where are we?
why, why, why?

I can't forgive you
and I can't forget

who are we?
where are we?
when are we?
why are we in here?

who are we?
where are we?

when are we?
why are we in here?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muse's song Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 are haunting and enigmatic, with questions that are universal and universalizing. The opening lines, "Aping my soul, You stole my overture" suggest an intrusion, a copycat or a mimic. This could refer to a person or a system that has appropriated someone's spirit or creativity. The notion of being "trapped in God's program" further reinforces the idea of being caught in a larger system that is beyond one's control. This could be read in religious or existential terms, invoking the concept of predestination or fatalism.

The repeated questions of "who are we? where are we? when are we? why are we?" emphasize the fundamental uncertainties and mysteries of existence. These questions could be interpreted in many ways, depending on the context and the interpretation of the listener. They could refer to philosophical, scientific, or personal inquiries about identity, location, time, and purpose. The repetition of the questions also creates a sense of urgency and confusion, as if the singer (and the listener) are desperately seeking answers but cannot find any.

Overall, the lyrics of Exogenesis: Symphony Part 1 are poetic and evocative, touching on themes of identity, agency, destiny, and the human condition in a way that is both universal and deeply personal.

This piece of music is one of those that is crafted so brilliantly that you can keep coming back to it again and again at different points in your life and still have an incredible experience. Depending on your mood, sometimes it's blissful, sometimes ecstatic, other times it's a twisted knife of anguish, but always transporting to that transcendental state of heightened emotion. Truly amazing that soundwaves can evoke such incredible experiences - hats off to Mr Bellamy ❤
