Ghosts
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've tried a million times
To get over it
But something deep inside
Just keeps holding it
So I'll just hold on
To memories of when we were happy
Just you and me
There was nothing in this world
That I could ever need
No I can't let you go
I'll hold you or your ghost
I will always remember
How you promised forever
No I can't let you go
I'll hold you or your ghost
So before I go
I want you to know
You'll be with me forever
I can't let go
I can't let go
Maybe you were never meant to be mine
But if that were true
Shouldn't I be fine?
Yeah I thought I was done
But I still got the pain
Yeah I'll fall in love
But it won't be the same
Every where I go
I swear that I still see your face
No I can't let you go
I'll hold you or your ghost
I will always remember
How you promised forever
No I can't let you go
I'll hold you or your ghost
So before I go
I want you to know
You'll be with me forever
I can feel my heart
Breaking through my chest
Memories they play inside my head
Like a movie where
We never got to see how it ends
All the things we could've been
But never were
I'm tryna heal
But it's only getting worse
And I'm scared
I'll never feel this way again
No I can't let you go
I'll hold you or your ghost
I will always remember
How you promised forever
I can't let you go
I'll hold you or your ghost
So before I go
I want you to know
You'll be with me forever

I can't let go
I can't let go

Overall Meaning

Muse's song "Ghosts" is a heart-wrenching ballad about holding on to memories of a lost love, and navigating the pain and memories associated with that loss. The opening lines, "I've tried a million times to get over it, but something deep inside just keeps holding it" reveals the struggle of moving on, despite a love that has long since slipped away. The singer is desperate to hold on to memories of the past, and cannot let go of the love that defined that time.

The song brings to light the complexities of heartache, and the difficulty of letting go of someone who played such an important role in one's life. The lyrics highlight the struggle of trying to come to terms with the end of a relationship, and the lingering presence of that person in one's life despite their physical absence. The line "Maybe you were never meant to be mine, but if that were true shouldn't I be fine?" reveals an internal conflict, where the singer questions their emotional ability to deal with the end of the relationship.

The repeated phrase "No I can't let you go, I'll hold you or your ghost" portrays the singer's desire to keep the memory of their love alive, even if they can never physically be together again. The lyrics also suggest that the singer has accepted that the pain associated with the loss of their love will always be a part of them, and that they will forever hold the memories of that love close.

Overall, "Ghosts" is a poignant reminder of the fragility of love, and the fact that even in the pain of heartbreak, memories of a previous love can live on forever.

Ghosts (How Can I Move On) Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Now and then
My mind drifts to a place where I find you
Lost in my head
There are unsolved feelings that haunt me
It's too late to heal
I'll lay them to rest

[Chorus 1]
How can I move on
When everyone I see still talks about you
How can I move on
When all the best things I have we made together
Here's to letting go
But I am lost in a void with your ghost and our memories
Lest we forget
The great reset

[Verse 2]
If I could bring you back
There are truths and confessions I'd tell you
I'd set things straight
And I believe that you would love and forgive me
I know it's too late
I need to let go

[Chorus 2]
How can I move on
When everyone I see still talks about you
How can I move on
When all the best things I have we built together
Here's to letting go
But I am trapped in a void with your ghost and our memories
Lest we forget
The great reset

[Bridge]
How can I sleep with this coldness beside me
How can I sleep with this coldness inside me
I know I can't bring back your love

[Chorus]
How can I move on
When everyone I see still talks about you
How can I move on
When all the best things I have were made together
Here's to letting go
But I am lost in a void with your ghost and our memories
Lest we forget
The great reset

Ghosts and Verona are some of Matt's best vocal performances in my opinion, and the lyrics too. Those are deep and hit hard. I think everyone can relate in one way or another.
