MK Ultra
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wavelength gently grows
Coercive notions re-evolve
A universe is trapped inside a tear
It resonates the core
Creates unnatural laws
Replaces love and happiness with fear

How much deception can you take?
How many lies will you create?
How much longer till you break?
Your mind's about to fall

And they are breaking through
They are breaking through
They are breaking through
(We are losing control)

They are breaking through
They are breaking through
They are breaking through
Now we are falling
We are losing control

Invisible to all
The mind becomes a wall
All of history deleted with one stroke

How much deception can you take?
How many lies will you create?
How much longer till you break?
Your mind's about to fall

And they are breaking through
They are breaking through
They are breaking through
Now we are falling
We are losing control

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muse's MK Ultra depict a bleak and dystopian future where individuals are being brainwashed and manipulated by a higher power. The first verse talks about how these coercive notions have been re-evolving and creating unnatural laws that replace love and happiness with fear. The universe is trapped inside a tear which resonates the core, implying that there's something fundamentally wrong with this system. The second verse asks how much deception one can take, how many lies they'll create, and how much longer it'll be before their mind breaks. The chorus talks about how everything is falling and how they are losing control.

Essentially, the song is about government mind control technology, which the band believed to be a real threat at the time. The title “MK Ultra” is derived from a top-secret CIA human experimentation program that occurred during the Cold War. This program was officially terminated in the 1970s, but there have been suspicions that it continues to this day.

Some have interpreted the lyrics as a commentary on the notion of “thought control,” something that governments have been trying to exert over their citizens for centuries. Despite the fact that the song’s lyrics refer to a dystopian future, the reality is that many of the themes of MK Ultra, such as media manipulation and the suppression of dissent, are entirely relevant to the present day.

How?
How??
How can Matt have that vocal range??
I mean have a listen to Showbiz or Survival; those high pitch notes are incredible, then listen to Assassin vocal track and this song, and don't ever tell me Matthew James Bellamy is a bad singer..
His voice is the best!!!

@GottaloveMuse1

Definitely one of their most underrated songs, and one of their best.

@PutzlumpenLP

It's always the underrated songs which are the best. Same is for many other bands, people unfortunately only get to know the mainstream songs but they often don't show the true talent of the band.

@GottaloveMuse1

Ah, I wouldn't say always. There are some bands where their most popular songs are generally their best; Thirty Seconds to Mars is an example. But yeah, what you said is generally true.

@PutzlumpenLP

Well in my opinion 30 Seconds to Mars isnt a good at all but you're right, especially one hit wonders.

@GottaloveMuse1

I never understand how people can say a band 'isn't good at all'. I mean, it's a rather ridiculous statement.

@PutzlumpenLP

I didn't say that. I said "in my opinion" which means that i just don't like them or their live performances.

You know you are heading towards middle age when you think "actually, some of these newer Muse songs are pretty cool", and then realise the album is ten years old.
