Soldier's Poem
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Throw it all away, let's lose ourselves
'Cause there's no one left for us to blame
It's a shame we're all dying
And do you think you deserve your freedom?

How could you send us all far away from home?
When you know damn well that this is all
I would still lay down my life for you
And do you think you deserve your freedom?

No, I don't think you do
There's no justice in the world

There's no justice in the world
And there never was

Overall Meaning

The song "Soldier's Poem" by Muse is a poignant commentary on the devastating impact of war. The lyrics speak of the senseless loss of young lives and the futility of fighting for a cause. The opening lines, "Throw it all away/Lets lose ourselves/Cause there's no one left for us to blame/Its a shame we're all dying," suggest a feeling of helplessness and despair. It highlights how the soldiers feel betrayed by the people who sent them to war and are now left to die alone.

The song then switches focus to the idea of freedom. The lyrics ask the listener whether they think they deserve their freedom when soldiers are dying fighting for it. The line "How could you send us all far away from home/When you know damn well that this is all/I would still lay down my life for you" expresses the notion of sacrifice and how soldiers are willing to lay down their lives for their country, even if it means being far away from their homes and loved ones.

The song then ends on the repeated line "There's no justice in the world/And there never was," emphasizing the harsh reality that war and death are inevitable and ultimately unjust. The lyrics of "Soldier's Poem" highlight the tragedy of war and send a strong message against the senseless violence that plagues our world.

Think it’s interesting how the backing melody sounds a little bit like “can’t help falling in love with you”, and the sung melody on the last couple lines sounds like “Ave Maria”. It’s such a juxtaposition to what the song is about, lyrically-the Elvis song that’s about being hopelessly in love with someone, and a holy song of peace. Used under lyrics that are full of resentment and hatred of innocent men thrown into and scarred by war. Just hits me hard somehow

Love your appreciation. I noticed the Elvis but will have to check out the Ava Maria connection.

Muse does the same or similar with Citizen Erased and Resistance, an instrumental in the middle of a song in their older album seems to be the intro for a song several albums later.
