Space Dementia
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

H-8
Is the one for me
It gives me all I need
And helps me coexist
With the chill

You make me sick
Because I adore you so
I love all the dirty tricks
And twisted games you play
On me

Space dementia in your eyes and
Peace will arise
And tear us apart
And make us meaningless again

You'll make us want to die
I'd cut your name in my heart
We'll destroy this world for you
I know you want me to
Feel your pain

Space dementia in your eyes and
Venus will arise

And tear us apart
And make us meaningless again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Space Dementia by Muse describe a dysfunctional and toxic relationship. The introduction of the song talks about finding comfort and relief in something, in this case, the H-8 which could be a reference to a drug or a person that gives a sense of purpose and survival. However, there is someone who makes the singer "sick" but at the same time, they adore them too much that they ignore the malicious actions that harm them. In the chorus, there is the expression of space dementia, a derangement caused by the hostile environment of outer space, which can be interpreted as the insanity that comes along when one is in a relationship like this. "Peace will arise and tear us apart and make us meaningless again" speaks to the idea that even the limited extent of sanity and tranquility they feel might not be enough to salvage the relationship that has failed, and it will only contribute to worsening the situation.

The second chorus reveals a hint of masochism, which the singer holds towards their partner. Even if it means pain and destruction, they would go to any extent to make their partner happy. The reference to space dementia and Venus can be seen as the celestial bodies holding power over the characters, as if they are doomed to go through this cycle of toxicity and insanity over and over again.

Next album definitely needs to be more classical, baroque oriented just like this one was. The blend between heavy rock and classical music is what makes Muse, Muse. You can add all the fun we hear in BR&R and ST, of course: synths, new experimental sounds, etc. But the core needs to be this: rocks and classical. OoS and Absolution, and even The Resistance, are true masterpieces as albums as a whole.

So far it kind of is? 😅

@Camila Santana Mesmo. E que os torna únicos mesmo hoje. Acho mesmo que deveriam manter esse registo, mesmo combinando texturas e sonoridades mais modernas.

Camila Santana

É exatamente essa combinação do rock com o clássico que fez eu me encantar pela banda!

@Universo Perpendicular you're right. I can't bear Simulation Theory but I looooove Drones. I'm not fan of The Resistance but I think Black Holes & Revelation is a masterpiece. We are all sensitive to certain styles. Most of all, we have to accept someone else taste ...

Universo Perpendicular

@Cam D Precisely that. And that's what Muse are: a lot of different styles, always very well written and executed. It's like there are more than one Muse: there's the heavy, classical Muse; the mix between Pop and Classical; the art rock, futuristic Muse; and so on, always with a special and very clear backbone-sound that distinguishes them, after all.

It's something very subtle in the original version, but emphasizing it with strings was the best choice ever made

I don't like the violins, imo they distract from the eerie space theme, and all of a sudden it sounds like a movie soundtrack instead of what it is, one of the most brilliant pieces of art created in the last century.
The music itself, without even the lyrics, tells a story of pain and struggle for deeper connections culminating into an acceptance of madness.
