United States of Eurasia
Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and me are the same
We don't know or care who's to blame
But we know that whoever holds the reins
Nothing will change
Our cause has gone insane

And these wars, they can't be won
And these wars, they can't be won
And do you want them to go on
And on and on
Why split these states
When there can be only one?

And must we do as we're told?
Must we do as we're told?

You and me fall in line
To be punished for unproven crimes!
And we know that there is no one we can trust;
Our ancient heroes, they are turning to dust!

And these wars, they can't be won
Does anyone know or care how they begun?
They just promise to go on
And on and on
But soon we will see
There can be only one

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of Muse's song "United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage," the singer suggests that he and his listeners are resigned to their fate, unwilling or unable to take responsibility for the chaos that surrounds them. They recognize that whoever is in power, the status quo will remain unchanged. Their "cause," or the reason for their continued participation in the war and political landscape, has gone "insane." The next verse questions the futility of the conflicts being fought - they cannot be won, and no one seems to care how they began. The singer suggests that it may be better to unite the warring factions rather than splitting them into divided states.

In the second half of the song, the desperation of the situation becomes more pronounced. The singer acknowledges that he and his listeners have been "punished for unproven crimes," presumably by the government or military forces they serve. They feel increasingly alone, with no one to trust and their heroes are fading away. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the importance of unity - the establishment of a united "United States of Eurasia" - as the only way out of this seemingly endless cycle of war and destruction.

I don't think Dom gets enough credit for the drumming in this song. It's so perfect at each point in the song. How can he make the perfect fill every time?!
