Bliss
Muse Muse Muse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything about you is how I'd want to be
Your freedom comes naturally
Everything about you resonates happiness
Now I won't settle for less

Give me
All the peace and joy in your mind
Everything about you pains my envying
Your soul can't hate anything
Everything about you is so easy to love
They're watching you from above

Give me
All the peace and joy in your mind
I want the peace and joy in your mind
Give me the peace and joy in your mind

Everything about you resonates happiness
Now I won't settle for less

Give me
All the peace and joy in your mind

I want the peace and joy in your mind
Give me the peace and joy in your mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Muse's song "Bliss" revolve around the singer's admiration and envy of another person's happiness and ease of being. The singer desires to have all the peace and joy in the other person's mind and does not want to settle for anything less. This person is portrayed as someone who is naturally free and happy, and who has a soul that can't hate anything.

The lyrics also suggest that there is something special or divine about this person, as they are being watched from above. The repeated phrase "give me all the peace and joy in your mind" emphasizes the singer's desire to obtain this person's state of being, and the idea that it is something that can be transferred or shared.

Overall, the song celebrates the idea of finding someone who embodies happiness and ease, and the desire to align oneself with that state of being in order to experience the same sense of contentment.

Not many people know what the song is really about, not even many Muse fans. Matt has said (on one occasion about 22 years ago) that the song is about admiring how a child can radiate happiness. "Everything about you resonates happiness". Just pure joy and bliss, without having to worry about anything, without any adult responsibilites, without having been exposed to stuff in life yet. And he said that he misses that feeling of being a child and would want to experience it again as an adult.

"Everything about you is so easy to love, they're watching you from above" literally means adults looking down at children and loving them.

"Everything about you is how I'd wanna be, your freedom comes naturally". A child can be completely in the moment, completely free, and be happy. And Matt envies that. "Everything about you pains my envying". He wants that for himself. "Give me all the peace and joy in your mind, I want the peace and joy in your mind". We've all had that when we were kids, but we grew out of it slowly. We can remember things from our childhood, but none of us really remember what it felt like being a child and what that carefree state of mind was like.

"Your soul can't hate anything". A child is incapable of hating anything or anyone the same way adults are. If something hurts a child, they might cry for a minute, but they will forget it in an instant and go on living their blissful, happy existence without growing to hate it.

Another interesting thing is that the background synth track is pretty much stolen from the theme music to a 1992 kids video game called Top Gear for the Super Nintendo (not that anyone ever sued Matt over it). Literally a game for kids.

And a third interesting fact: In the early 2000's, they used to play this song live all the time with those huge balloons unleashed upon the audience about halfway through the song. Those balloons are literally something that kids would go crazy over, not adults, because adults don't care about balloons. Kids would jump up and down out of joy if they had balloons like that. But so did the audience. For a brief moment, the people in the audience got to feel that bliss and joy of being a child, lost in the present moment.

All in all, it's a song about kids! :D
