Keep It to Yourself
Musgraves Kacey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You turn on the light
Then you turn it back off
'Cause sleeping alone, yeah, it ain't what you thought
It's the drip of the sink
It's the click of the clock
And you're wondering if I'm sleeping

You heard from your friends
That I'm doing okay
And you're thinking that maybe you made a mistake
And you want me to know
But I don't wanna know
How you're feeling

Keep it to yourself
If you think that you still love me
Put it on a shelf
If you're looking for someone
Make it someone else
When you're drunk
And it's late
And you're missing me like hell
Keep it to yourself

If you see me out and I'm standing alone
Well, it don't mean that I'm gonna need a ride home
If you walk up to me like it ain't what it is
I know that it ain't gonna end with a kiss

So keep it to yourself
If you think that you still love me
Put it on a shelf
If you're looking for someone
Make it someone else
When you're drunk
And it's late
And you're missing me like hell
Just keep it to yourself
Yeah, keep it to yourself

Yeah, when you're drunk
And it's late
And you're sad
And you hate going home alone
'Cause you're missing me like hell
Keep it to yourself
Yeah, keep it to yourself

Yeah, keep it to yourself
Hmm

Overall Meaning

"Keep It to Yourself" is a song by Kacey Musgraves that tells the story of a failed love affair between two people who have gone their separate ways. The song speaks to the pain and longing that can follow a break-up, as well as the temptation to reach out and rekindle old flames. The chorus of the song is a plea on the part of the singer to the person who has left her to keep their feelings to themselves, rather than burdening her with unsolicited confessions of love.

The first verse sets the scene for the rest of the song, with its references to insomnia and the lonely sound of a dripping sink. The second verse acknowledges the difficulty of trying to move on from a relationship, especially when there are lingering feelings of regret and nostalgia. The chorus reinforces the idea that the best thing for both parties is to let go and move on, rather than dwelling on what could have been.

Overall, Musgraves has crafted a poignant and relatable portrait of a romantic impasse, one that many listeners will likely recognize from their own experiences.

I can't stop listening to this young lady (for 2 days now), and i've been a musician for 50 years! She is something else.

Isaiah wright

This girl is the best thing to come to country music in ages. She's soo real and raw and has talent beyond her years. I think she'll be around for many years. And this song speaks to both the male and female perspective

Jared

I'm a 35 yr old dude who has never liked country music. Kacey changed all that. As a singer/songwriter, she is on another level.

Spence Hogg I know it’s been awhile since this was posted, but if you like her “gams,” (lol, I heard the dad on Everybody Loves Raymond explain to Ray that ‘gams’ were legs, otherwise I wouldn’t have been so sure) then check out the video of her singing with Loretta at the Opry (CMA’s I think). The dress is short enough...but if you want to know why she’s holding her ‘gams’ together so closely as she walks (AND HELL YES SHE’s FINE and I’m a guy so don’t read this is you offend easy...but I love her for her talent first lol....No Shit on this one lmao) is because of a wardrobe malfunction. Apparently with the dress (you’ll see lol), they use tape on ‘under garments’ and they came loose and were hanging out of the back of the dress right when the door opened for her to come out. She had really only one choice. Yep... Just type her name and wardrobe malfunction in Google. There’s nothing to see there, but with the dress being that short it just has a little extra dimension to the video LOL.

@Louis Casas well...she got the recognition she deserved when she won the Grammy for “Best Country Album,” and then the Grammy for “Album of the Year.” To win album of the year at the Grammys, when you are basically competing against every single record that was made and submitted that year, in every genre, and going up against the biggest names in the music industry, and being nominated with her little country album in the mix of the other five that were nominated, I thought to myself, “This little country album against these other big names is just there to be nice I think.“ But then she WON IT. That’s HUGE!

She also won the CMA (the premier country awards show) Female Vocalist of the Year last year (the CMA’s will be televised in September again). I am hoping she gets some more recognition then, although she hasn’t dropped a new album since the last one.

She’s also having huge sellout crowds now and she didn’t sell out to the politics of the business and kiss country radios ass. I LOVE HER AND SHE IS RAW TALENT, and an overall bad ass! Nice to have someone who can see through the politics of it other than myself. Thanks for responding 🙏😁😉

Louis Casas

@Chris Kidd she has gone against every female country western stereotype AKA Taylor Swift and her "emo pop country" without caring about the haters

Spence Hogg

@Chris Kidd Yeah, and those gams ain't so bad either. Apparently, she doesn't mind showing those off...

Usually I "hate" when people share their relationship stories... but this song right here helped me finally, once and for all, completely cut off and cut ties with a toxic relationship. Someone for the last few years I knew was no good and things would never change but I kept around and always let back in. Not anymore. Know your worth, and if something no longer serves you or the work you're putting in isn't being met, it's okay to burn that bridge. Sometimes its what's best hard as it may be. ❤
