Sabay sabay na inatake
Sa naghuhumiyaw na liwanag
Walang awang pinagpapaslang
Nakawala
The lyrics of MusikangBayan's song "Asong Ulol" delve into the idea of power play and oppression. The song talks about innocent civilians who are attacked by the "asong ulol ng palasyo" or the crazed dogs of the palace who mercilessly slay them. These are the same dogs who have been trained to guard the monarchy and the ones who have been touted as the perpetrators of crimes.
The second stanza questions the authority that governs and controls these dogs. Who is it that chases and captures them? Who commands and who obeys? The song highlights the complexity of power dynamics and that even the mighty palace dogs can be a subject of oppression themselves. The chorus repeats the term "Asong Ulol" and implies the monstrous nature of power and the devastating impact it has on the lives of ordinary people.
The song metaphorically underscores the idea of servitude by comparing the palace dogs to people who are bound to serve a particular ideology or oppressive regime. The track hints at the need for those dogs to be freed from their duties and their roles as perpetrators. Its powerful lyrics show the ugly and dangerous nature of power, where it can twist even the strongest and trained individuals to its advantage.
