In The Night
Mustasch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All my life I have been told

To bow my head in awe

Now those days are over

I refuse to feel small
Did you really think

This game could end up a draw

Did you really think you had

The arms to win this war

And you sacrificed a lot of time

To keep me to the floor

A renegade left bleeding cold

A stranger in your home

A little spieces you could breed

And form into your norms

Hey, the little spieces, now he's tall

So bow your heads in awe

Here it is, the night has come

The last defense, crumbled down

I'm alone, but I feel strong

I'm taking out the skeletons

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mustasch's song "In The Night" take on a powerful and defiant tone. The singer explores themes of oppression, rebellion and self-discovery. The opening verse voices the singer's frustration with being told to "bow [their] head in awe" for their entire life, implying they were expected to live in subservience. However, the singer has had enough, the "days are over" and now they "refuse to feel small". The following lines address an unseen opponent who the singer believes misconstrued their power and abilities, they warn them that the game will not end in a draw and that they can't win the war. It's clear that the singer has been held down figuratively in some way for a long time, and the opponent who they address seems to have benefited from this. But the singer has now gotten stronger, grown taller in a sense and commands respect, their oppressor should bow "in awe".

The second half of the song takes a more introspective turn, the singer reflects on the struggles they've had to endure and the sacrifices they've had to make. They describe themselves as a ghost or "renegade left bleeding cold" who was once a "stranger in [their] home". They allude that they had once followed the norms dictated by their opponent but they have now grown stronger and refuse to be held down. The final verse contains some of the most potent metaphors in the song. The little spieces that their oppressor attempted to breed is unrecognisable, they are no longer small and can now take charge. The night has come and the singer is ready to fight. Whatever has been holding them back, the "skeletons," they're now "taking out".
