MxPx started as three 15-year-old kids calling themselves Magnified Plaid pounding out music inspired by and similar to The Descendents and other Southern California punk rock bands. They didn’t really love their band name, however, which was a tribute to the original guitarist’s penchant for wearing one particularly loud plaid shirt. Consequently, the name was abbreviated to M.P., but in Yuri’s handwriting, periods become “X“‘s and since he made up the show posters for the band, the four-letter moniker stuck.
Andy Husted, the former guitarist, left the band in 1995 to continue college.
Andy was replaced by Tom to solidify the line-up that would take the band into their post-teen years. Maybe Tom’s background as a drummer made up for his relative inexperience playing guitar (he had only played for a year at the time). He and Yuri lock into backbreakingly fast rhythms that rank with vintage Minor Threat for speed and percussive attack. Mike then adds to the mix his signature sing-along melodies that call to mind SoCal punk bands from the early ’80s.
Bremerton had been a town most famous for its naval shipyards until MxPx caught the attention of Tooth & Nail Records when they played a “showcase” for the T&N label in 1993 in Herrera’s parents’ garage. Mike Herrera had practiced so much before the first show, he lost his voice.
MxPx released three albums with Tooth & Nail Records: Pokinatcha in 1994, Teenage Politics in 1995, and Life in General in 1996. After a falling out with Tooth & Nail, MxPx left the label and signed with A&M Records.
In July 2010 drummer Yuri Ruley announced he would be retiring from the band to focus on his family. Ruley played his last show with the band in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 18, 2010. In a recent video message from Mike, he stated that Tom and Yuri have both finished touring full time, but will continue to play one-off shows with the band.

But what did I say?
You felt your ears were ringing
But what does that say?
Not a whole lot matters
When your whole world shatters
Not a whole lot matters
We've fallen on our faces
So many times
We've faked those social graces
Most of our lives
Not a whole lot matters
When your whole world shatters
Not a whole lot matters
Running out of time, running out of time
Out of my mind
And I can't find
A way to tell you
Running out of time, running out of time
Out of my mind
And I can't find
A way to tell you
To trust sometimes is harder
Than anything
We think we've gotten better
But we're not listening
Not a whole lot matters
When your whole world shatters
Not a whole lot matters
Running out of time, running out of time
Out of my mind
And I can't find
A way to tell you
Running out of time, running out of time
Out of my mind
And I can't find
A way to tell you
When time stands so still
This so called life
Has lost its thrill
Take me home
Take me home
Running out of time, running out of time
Out of my mind
And I can't find
A way to tell you
Running out of time, running out of time
Out of my mind
And I can't find
A way to tell you
'Cause not a whole lot matters
When your whole world shatters
Not a whole lot matters
Not a whole lot matters
The lyrics of MxPx's song "Running Out of Time" seem to reflect on the feeling of hopelessness that arises despite the attempts of trying to make things work in life. The opening lines "You heard me softly singing / But what did I say? / You felt your ears were ringing / But what does that say?" reflect on the communication gap between people, displaying how sometimes we may speak, but others may not hear or understand what we are trying to say, leading to a sense of disconnection.
The lines, "We've fallen on our faces / So many times / We've faked those social graces / Most of our lives" reflect on the struggle of trying to fit in and maintain a facade of normalcy despite the inner turmoil we may feel. The lyrics seem to indicate that despite trying to maintain appearances, there are times when it all falls apart and everything starts to crumble.
The chorus, "Running out of time, running out of time / Out of my mind / And I can't find/ A way to tell you" reflects the sense of urgency and helplessness that the singer feels. They seem to want to communicate but are unable to find a way to express themselves effectively. The final lines "Not a whole lot matters / When your whole world shatters / Not a whole lot matters" convey the idea that sometimes when everything seems to be falling apart, it is difficult to find a sense of purpose or meaning in life.

You heard me softly singing
You were present when I expressed my thoughts in a gentle manner
But what did I say?
Did you really understand what I meant to convey?
You felt your ears were ringing
You experienced a sensation of ringing in your ears
But what does that say?
Does it hold any significance or was it just a random occurrence?
Not a whole lot matters
Not much holds importance
When your whole world shatters
When everything you believed in falls apart
We've fallen on our faces
We have failed numerous times
So many times
A countless number of times
We've faked those social graces
We have pretended to have certain social skills
Most of our lives
For a significant portion of our existence
Running out of time, running out of time
The clock is ticking, there is little time left
Out of my mind
I am not thinking clearly
And I can't find
I am unable to discover
A way to tell you
How to express what I want to say to you
To trust sometimes is harder
Believing in someone can be difficult at times
Than anything
More challenging than most things
We think we've gotten better
We believe we have improved
But we're not listening
We are not paying attention
When time stands so still
In moments where time seems to have stopped
This so-called life
The existence we are living
Has lost its thrill
Has become unexciting and monotonous
Take me home
Bring me back to a place where I feel comfortable and at peace
'Cause not a whole lot matters
Because very little is truly important
