MxPx started as three 15-year-old kids calling themselves Magnified Plaid pounding out music inspired by and similar to The Descendents and other Southern California punk rock bands. They didn’t really love their band name, however, which was a tribute to the original guitarist’s penchant for wearing one particularly loud plaid shirt. Consequently, the name was abbreviated to M.P., but in Yuri’s handwriting, periods become “X“‘s and since he made up the show posters for the band, the four-letter moniker stuck.
Andy Husted, the former guitarist, left the band in 1995 to continue college.
Andy was replaced by Tom to solidify the line-up that would take the band into their post-teen years. Maybe Tom’s background as a drummer made up for his relative inexperience playing guitar (he had only played for a year at the time). He and Yuri lock into backbreakingly fast rhythms that rank with vintage Minor Threat for speed and percussive attack. Mike then adds to the mix his signature sing-along melodies that call to mind SoCal punk bands from the early ’80s.
Bremerton had been a town most famous for its naval shipyards until MxPx caught the attention of Tooth & Nail Records when they played a “showcase” for the T&N label in 1993 in Herrera’s parents’ garage. Mike Herrera had practiced so much before the first show, he lost his voice.
MxPx released three albums with Tooth & Nail Records: Pokinatcha in 1994, Teenage Politics in 1995, and Life in General in 1996. After a falling out with Tooth & Nail, MxPx left the label and signed with A&M Records.
In July 2010 drummer Yuri Ruley announced he would be retiring from the band to focus on his family. Ruley played his last show with the band in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 18, 2010. In a recent video message from Mike, he stated that Tom and Yuri have both finished touring full time, but will continue to play one-off shows with the band.

When everything is ok
It just turns out that life ain't that way
Big decisions overwhelm me and I know nothing's free
When I don't think of think about much
People die and we don't know why
I could use some understanding
I don't want to let my life fly by
Did you ever stop to wonder why ever stop to wonder wonder why?
And time stands still when no one understands you
When you don't quite understand yourself
But just know this that God is faithful
Even if you don't have faith yourself
There's nothing quite like being sure of
What's inside your heart
It's mostly simple but not so easy
To know just where to start
Today didn't have to be this way
Tomorrow is another day
Another chance to make things right
A chance to make sense of last night
A chance to fully live your life
I don't want to, I don't want to, you don't want to
The lyrics of MxPx's song "Tomorrow's Another Day" convey a sense of anxiety and uncertainty about life in general. The singer acknowledges the fleeting nature of time, how it seems to fly by when things are going well and stand still when everything seems to be going wrong. The uncertainties of life, big decisions, and the feeling of being overwhelmed are all themes that the singer explores in this song.
The section "When I don't think of think about much, People die and we don't know why, I could use some understanding, Human contact sign that contract" is a commentary on the existential crises that afflict many people. The singer seems to be saying that in the face of life's uncertainties, all he needs is some understanding and human connection. Moreover, the mention of death seems to suggest that life is delicate and that we should cherish every moment.
In the final verse, the singer expresses a sense of hope, acknowledging that tomorrow is another day and another chance to make things right. The line "Today didn't have to be this way, Tomorrow is another day" is an affirmation that things can always get better, that there is always an opportunity to make things right.
