The story that is My Epic has been in the works for several years. The whole process started in 1998 when Aaron, Jesse, and Matt first started playing together in what quickly became their first band, The Right Wing Conspiracy, later known as Shaddai. Through their experiences together, the five boys in Shaddai grew as musicians and as a band, and by the summer of 2004, after playing shows ranging from their home town of Fredericksburg, VA to Cornerstone Festival in Illinois and earning a reputation for their energy as well as their technical ability and songwriting prowess, Shaddai was on the brink of taking over the world. Jesse was about to join the rest of the band in the college world, and with the whole band living close together, good things looked to be just ahead. The momentum of the band was brought to a halt in the later part of the summer with the departure of Jono, and the remaining members of Shaddai were faced with the decision of whether to press on, reform, restart, or retire. They knew that it was time to put Shaddai in the past. They threw the ashes of Shaddai to the wind and looked back on the era with a grin. Within a short amount of time, after very little discussion, Aaron, Jesse, and Matt realized the obvious: they had to keep playing together, but something new was in the air. What began as a dilemma actually became a blessing as the three of them found themselves with a chance to refine their focus and take their music in a more adventurous direction. Jono stuck around as the band's closest friend and applied his savvy of all things business to the task of managing the band.
_____It was easy enough to realize the opportunity to begin something new, but the band still needed to complete their lineup with a bass player. Over the remainder of the summer, the as yet unnamed band were working hard to put their heads together, and there was very quick agreement that their school friend Jeremiah would be just the person for the job. As Aaron tells it, the band was thinking of the people they knew, and "the whole time, Jeremiah was just the only person we could think about." They returned to school to find that Jeremiah had moved into the dorm in the room next to Jesse's, and this turn of events was too big to be coincidence. The fit was too natural not to be perfect, and in September of 2004, there were four members of the band with a common vision and a passion waiting to be released. By February, the band was ready to play their first show, which ended up being a very successful and impressive debut in front of a few hundred receptive and enthusiastic audience members. My Epic spent a few days in March of 2005 recording a two-song teaser with their good friend and producer extraordinaire Andrew Prousalis. With the band out of the blocks and off at full speed, it's just a matter of time before their momentum carries them to the attention of anyone with their ear to the ground.

To see You slain again
To watch you writhe and bleed
Yet never once weep
I always thought that I would have fought had I been alive
I would have stay to the end, wept at Your feet, and died by Your side
Limb from limb
but I keep my peace and my distance
How can I claim to love You
When here Your body lies strewn
I dwell amongst the pieces
And never feel moved
To grieve as my own, the state of it
And give more than just passive dissent
I swore at the start, “oh heart of my heart”, we’re one in the same
But then I kept You confined, and clearly defined, and now I don’t feel a thing
Yet again, they beat You down
And tear You limb from limb
And we wash our hands then
Raise them up in remembrance
“bless You Lord, leave us be, rest in peace”
You’re not a memory we celebrate
You’re not a martyr that we venerate
and God forgive us if the church forgets
You are not a corpse and we’re not a movement
You’re alive and we’re the flesh You’ll wear till the worlds end
Resurrect
Resurrect
I feel the weight and worth in all of this
That we are Your embodiment
Resurrect theses hearts of stone
To beat with Yours again
For greater works as we
Walk as one in Your likeness
So that men can behold and believe
You are not a corpse and we’re not a movement
You’re alive and we’re the flesh You’ll wear till the worlds end
The lyrics to My Epic's song "Curse" explore the complex emotions and difficult questions that arise when contemplating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The song opens with the singer questioning whether they are made of stone or flesh, unable to shed tears over the suffering Christ endured. The singer acknowledges a sense of guilt that they were not present during the crucifixion, expressing a desire to have been able to stand by Jesus and weep at his feet.
However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is also struggling with a more existential crisis. They question how they can truly claim to love Christ when they are not moved by his suffering, and when they are constantly distancing themselves from the reality of his death. The chorus emphasizes the idea that Christ is not simply a historical figure that Christians remember in a passive way; rather, he is a living embodiment that Christians must strive to emulate.
The final lines of the song call for the resurrection of "hearts of stone," a nod to the biblical language used to describe a transformation of the self. The singer recognizes that it is only by becoming truly like Christ that the church can continue to spread his message and impact the world.

Am I of stone or flesh
I am questioning if I am even capable of having emotions and feeling empathy
To see You slain again
To witness Your death and suffering repeatedly

But not shed a single tear in mourning or sympathy
I always thought that I would have fought had I been alive
I used to believe that I would have defended You if I had been there during Your crucifixion
I would have stay to the end, wept at Your feet, and died by Your side
I would have stayed loyal to You until the very end, cried at Your feet and even given my life for You
Yet again they beat You down and tear You limb from limb
But once again, they harm You and tear You apart piece by piece
But I keep my peace and my distance
But I choose to remain silent and detached from Your suffering and ignore the call for action
How can I claim to love You
I am questioning how I can say that I love You
When here Your body lies strewn
When Your body is lying here in pieces
I dwell amongst the pieces
I am surrounded by the remains of Your body

But I am not emotionally affected
To grieve as my own, the state of it

And give more than just passive dissent
But to take action and do more than just disagree without speaking up

We don't just glorify You as a martyr

This album is one that I always come back to because it gave me a sense of direction and hope during a period in my life where I felt distant from God. In all of their music I can feel a heart that is seeking after God. It’s anointed. God bless you guys❤
