Cobra
My Morning Jacket Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cobra comes up next to me
Anywhere he goes, he's silently
How do you take speaking so much?
How do you live without a lover's touch?
Dale always says it's easy
I'm hooked on four like one, two, three
I got them moves, declared to me
You need to listen cuz I guarantee you're for sure

Now I know I've been movin' too much
I'm gonna live for my hottie's touch

How do you take him speaking so much?
How do you live without a lover's touch?

Covered in charcoal, head to toe
Sticky, stick charcoal, I want you to know
How I long till I get these off
They're so convenient but at such a cost
King I go out to plead
Sticky, sticky warmth, come and rush to me
I want to know, I want to see
There's life for me

Oh how I long till I get these off
They're so convenient but at such a cost.

I know somebody, yes, I know someone
Who loves to wait, loves to wait for the policeman to come.
I know somebody, yes, I know them well
And I'm aware of the thought they call ringing the bell

Four on the floor and four in the air
I'm drinkin' cold, cold lightning with the bugs in my hair
I knew a partner, yes, I knew his house (now)

I know somebody, yes, I know someone
Who likes to wait, likes to wait for the policeman to come.

I know somebody, yes, I know them well
And I'm aware of the thought they call ringing the bell
Four on the floor and four in the air
I'm drinkin' cold, cold lightning with the bugs in my hair
I knew a partner, yes, I knew his house

Why do my toes always feel so cold?
How come? How come? How come?
Why's all the soap always burn like a rope?
How come? How come? How come?
When I see your reflection, it always frightens me
So strong that I can hardly speak.
How come?

Mixed up potion, the summer's ocean
I feel I'm swimming in tannin lotion
Too many car chairs, and not enough leads
How come? How come? How come?

Thank you for all the sleep
So I know the spark's aside
Stuff that keeps me clean
Stuff that helps me breathe
The lamps, the lights, the kerosene
Beautiful, two gardenias spring
How come?

Why does all the soap always burn like the rope?
How come? How come? How come?

Why's all my toes always seem so cold?
How come? How come? How come?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Cobra by My Morning Jacket have a stream of consciousness feel, like the singer is revealing a series of random thoughts, observations, and questions guided by a disjointed narrative. The verses seem to describe the singer's emotional and physical state, as well as some encounters with other people, while the chorus repeats two main questions about communication and the craving for physical contact. The song starts with the singer being close to someone referred to as Cobra, a person who is quiet and maybe mysterious, and then segues to a dialogue with a Dale who claims it's easy to live with no lover's touch. Meanwhile, the singer asserts they are hooked on something, maybe a drug or a rhythm, and encourages the listener to heed their words. The second verse talks about being dirty and sticky and feeling the cost of convenience; the singer pleads for comfort to come and hints at a possible escape. In the third verse, the singer knows someone who likes to wait for the police and who rings the bell, a symbol that could represent a warning or a call for help. The end of the song poses more questions about sensory experiences, some positive like the beauty of gardenias, others negative like the burning of soap or the coldness of toes.

best band in the world! Best live band as well. great light show. seeing them is an amazing experience. sexy as hell music with groove, funk and soul.

Rightcoast Mike

Try an Umphreys show, your “lights” opinion might change. MMJ is amazing

Cristal M

This song has me floating to another realm, one where disco reigns, rock music blasts, funk lives long, and the beat goes on and on. 24 mins of sound pleasure on repeat!

Presto

how fried were you

robo hat

I am amazed by this absolutely perfectly balanced mix of all this band can offer to you. Their music is hypnotyzing.
"Sticky, sticky warmth, come and rush to me"

Mar Mascaró

My favourite song of all time.

ArchdukeTyler

I just got the vinyl of this album in the mail and I've gotta say, it is one KILLER album! Not only does this song itself epitomize everything that is My Morning Jacket, but it's absolutely phenomenal. They had to rearrange the album and put this song on its own side to fit on the vinyl.

Mr Robot

Did you get picture disc?

Jane Adelaide Lennox

These guys don't really limit themselves to one style. They kind of throw that into your face with this song. I like this.

Brad W

Yep there is a minimum of 1 genre-breaker per album. lol.
Highly suspicious probably being the most well known, it freaked some fans out but i just think it shows his genius. And if im not mistaken it was the first single from evil urges so possibly another example of him throwing that out on purpose
