Morning Prayer
My Ruin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was drowning again
You grabbed my hand and pulled me to safety
As I looked into your eyes
I saw my saviour
The person that I knew had been there all along
Just waiting for the chance to kill me
Then all my teeth fell out
I hate it when that happens
The lyrics of My Ruin's song "Morning Prayer" describe a dream that the singer had about drowning and being saved by someone who they describe as their savior. The dream takes an unexpected turn when the singer realizes that the person who saved them is also the person who wanted to harm them. Despite this realization, the singer kisses this person, leading to a grotesque display of blood and the loss of all their teeth.
In these lyrics, the dream serves as a metaphor for a toxic relationship in which the singer is always in danger of drowning. The savior represents the person that the singer loves, who is simultaneously the reason for their suffering. The kiss that leads to the loss of teeth can be interpreted as a painful realization that their love is not reciprocated and that it is leading to the destruction of the singer's sense of self.

Last night I had a dream
I had a vision while I was asleep
I was drowning again
I felt like I was suffocating or going under
You grabbed my hand and pulled me to safety
I was saved by someone who cared for me
As I looked into your eyes
I gazed into your soul
I saw my saviour
I saw the person who could help or save me
The person that I knew had been there all along
The individual who I was familiar with was always present
Just waiting for the chance to kill me
Lurking in the shadows, anticipating my downfall
We kissed and my mouth started to bleed
Our embrace was passionate and resulted in injury
Then all my teeth fell out
My figurative and literal support crumbled
I hate it when that happens
I detest the consequences of my actions or the situation
