Monsters in the Dark
Mykey Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There are monsters in the dark.
You've got to find them on your own, and then
We said, we said, last words over the phone.
We road the interstate, while she would drive I'd narrate
Singin' our old songs from back home.
Come on, come on, that's it now, Pick up, we're gonna hit the town.
Come on, come on. (Whoa!) Come on, come on. (Whoa!)
We're not gonna stick around, Better put on your dancing gown.
Come on, come on. (Whoa!) Come on, come on. (Whoa!)
There are monsters in the dark! / They're not gonna keep us apart
(Hold me higher. Hold me high)
I'll search with all of my heart
(Hold me higher. Hold me high)
There are monsters in the dark!
And a single step is all it takes. Over oceans, all emotions, I feel trapped under the weight.
(Can't keep my) Head above water, long enough to say, that I love and miss you dearly,
More and more after each day. (What's in the dark?)
And I start to feel like one of them. I keep waking up beside her every time a different bed,
Woken by strangers, no word from friends. Well there's some evil ones just haven't found them yet.
Come on, come on, that's it now, Pick up, we're gonna hit the town.
Come on, come on. (Whoa!) Come on, come on. (Whoa!)
We're not gonna stick around, Better put on your dancing gown.
Come on, come on. (Whoa!) Come on, come on. (Whoa!)
There are monsters in the dark! / They're not gonna keep us apart
(Hold me higher. Hold me high)
I'll search with all of my heart
(Hold me higher. Hold me high)
They're not gonna keep us apart
(Hold me higher. Hold me high)
I'll search with all of my heart

(Hold me higher. Hold me high)
There are monsters in the dark!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mykey's song "Monsters in the Dark" seem to be about the fear of the unknown, of being lost or trapped in the dark with monsters lurking around. It's a metaphor for the struggles and uncertainties of life, and the need to find one's own way through them, without being afraid.

The first verse sets the scene of a journey being taken, perhaps a physical journey but also a metaphorical one through life. The two people in the car are looking for something, searching for answers, but all they have are old memories and songs to comfort them. The chorus comes in with its catchy refrain that seems to assert that the darkness and the monsters within it cannot keep them apart. It's a message of defiance against fear and uncertainty, a way of saying that no matter what happens, they will keep going, keep dancing and keep searching for a way forward.

The second verse talks about the weight of emotion that can sometimes make us feel as if we are drowning. The singer can't seem to keep their head above water long enough to say what they need to say to the people they miss and love. They feel lost and alone, waking up in strange beds next to strangers, feeling as if they are becoming one of the monsters they have been searching for. Once again, the chorus comes in, reminding us that we can get through the darkness if we hold on to each other and keep searching.
