L'autre

The song L'autre by Mylène Farmer is a reflection on the self and the other, the duality of human nature and the search for companionship. It is a contemplation on the nature of relationships, the need for connection and the complexities of identity. The lyrics convey a sense of awe and wonder at the mystery of the other, and the sense of isolation that sometimes accompanies the human experience.
The first verse expresses the sense of unease and excitement that comes from encountering the other, someone who seems to be close yet distant at the same time. The metaphor of "frôler l'autre," or brushing against the other, suggests a fleeting but meaningful encounter, one that leaves a mark on the soul. The second verse speaks to the longing for companionship, the desire to believe that there is something more than the isolation of the self. This is represented by the image of an angel passing by, offering comfort and reassurance that there is indeed another presence in our lives.
The chorus repeats the refrain "Mais qui est l'autre" or "Who is the other," emphasizing the mystery and depth of the other's identity. The final verse suggests that we can find solace and strength in the presence of the other, and that together we can create something new and meaningful.
Overall, the song is a powerful meditation on the human condition, the search for connection and the complexities of identity.

I fell in love with this song in 1991, recorded on a then TDK cassette from a radio station in Buenos Aires where I lived at the time. But the radio station played songs without the credits. So I never knew who the artist was. Then I lost that cassette and never heard the song again, just in my memory. Then, in 2022, more than 30 years later, I found the song again by chance thanks to my girlfriend who gave me a YouTube link with the Katie Ryan version. I was very happy I found it! I thought to myself, although it was not the original version that my girlfriend had passed me, I immediately looked on Youtube and knew that the original artist was Mylene Farmer. 30 years! I found the song after 30 years!!!
