PRIDE
Mystery Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What if all the love and hate around me would merge as one?
Would all the shadows walking by me just fade away?
What if all the love and hate around me could merge as one?

I never thought I'd live to see the day
A tear would come crawling down my face
Breaking down my Pride
What if all the Stars that shine above me would start to Fall?
Would shadows glowing near by help me feel safe and sound?
Why do all the Stars that shine above me keep falling down?

She never thought we'd live to see this day
When tears would come rolling down his face

I never thought I'd live to see this day
When tears would keep running down his face
And take away his pride

Once the father figure dies
Leaves the mother figure cry
Alone in the dark a child
Tries to hold on to his Pride

Bring down the walls all around
And break the chains that hold you down
Healing scars will leave behind
A cold and icy winter night
Pride

Once the walls have fallen down
Bring the little king back his crown
If you look him in his eyes
Please bring him back his Pride

What if all the rage that runs in our veins
Could turn to fire?
Would that be enough to scare away the enemy
And free the child?

Who could have told we'd live to see the day
When tears would come rolling down our face
And steal away our pride

Pride
How does it feel to cry?
How does it feel to have to hide?
Can I help you for a while?

Pride
Just look me in the eyes
I thought you would be by my side
If only for a while

Pride
How does it feel to cry?
How does it feel to have to hide?
Can I help you for a while?

Pride
Just look me in the eyes

I thought you would be by my side
If only for a while

Overall Meaning

The song "Pride" by Mystery explores the theme of masculine pride and its potential destruction through the emotional pain of loss and vulnerability. The lyrics begin with a question about the possibility of love and hate merging together to eliminate shadows and darkness. This is followed by a contemplation of falling stars and the safety provided by glowing shadows. The song then shifts to a focus on the singer's own tearful emotions, breaking down his sense of pride.

The following verses recount the experiences of others dealing with loss, including a child trying to hold onto his sense of pride in the face of a father's death, and the singer offering comfort to someone experiencing their own tears and loss of pride. The chorus repeats the titular word "Pride" as a meditation on the emotion, both its positive and negative aspects. The final verse asks another question, imagining the power of transforming rage into fire and using it to defeat enemies and protect children.

Overall, the song suggests that pride can be both a source of strength and a weakness, and that allowing oneself to feel vulnerable and to accept help from others is essential for healing and growth.

The whole song is amazing, but the part between 5:00 and 7:00 is impressive... The perfect mix between Rush and Marillion!

@jakobveland.8083

@showeyes

@maelstrom2003

Wonderful piece. I have just discovered them and I'm very surprised.

@Marctull66

It's such a beautiful piece...One of the best that Michel St Père wrote. The band is doing an excellent performance. Benoit David sings this so perfectly... I do miss him a lot... wonderful singer, very sensitive, very clear, soulful voice... He was better in Mystery than in Yes. It fits his range better... He was forcing his voice too much in Yes, at least in the live context. Anyway, this album is Mystery's best, in my humble opinion... I love it more and more as time goes by...

@michaelkeudel8770

The new singer Jean Pageu has been fantastic, bunch of live concerts with him online, the band and the music is brilliant.

@Marctull66

I think his name is Jean Pageau (pronounced "pajo"). I love the names we find in Quebec.. .Typical old French names... and yes, he has a very good voice. I heard him on live recordings too. Very clear voice, a bit like Saga's Michael Sadler.

@alanmachado3523
