All the Way
N.E.W. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You and me better place
Long lost everyday
No the weather never goes our way
Always lie to my face
Clear to be in a cage
Truth never has a place
We can never love all the way
Hold me all the way now
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
When I fall
Love me all the way
Hold me all the way now
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
When I fall
Leave it up to me though
You don’t seem to follow through
There’s something you need to know
Can you love heartbroken
And if so, you decide, to draw the line
Maybe then we can love our life
Love me all the way
Hold me all the way now
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
When I fall
Love me all the way
Hold me all the way now
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
When I fall
I ran out through the door
I can’t take this no more
You don’t like when I leave
It’s what’s meant to be
Love me all the way
Hold me all the way now
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
When I fall
Love me all the way
Hold me all the way now
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
When I fall
In "All the Way," N.E.W. sings about love and relationships that have gone astray, and the desire to find a new way to make things work. The song begins with the singer admitting that they are looking for another way, and that they believe that they and their partner can be a better match. However, things are far from perfect, as they observe that they are "Long lost everyday" and the weather "never goes our way." The singer also feels that their partner is not being truthful with them, and that they are trapped in a cage without any way out. They lament that truth never seems to have a place in their relationship, and that they cannot seem to love each other "all the way."
Despite this, the chorus is an appeal to be held and loved, even in difficult times when they are trying to pick themselves up. They ask to be loved "all the way" and for their partner to hold them tightly, as they are falling and need support. The second verse shifts to a more confrontational tone, as the singer challenges their partner to step up and follow through on their commitments. They ask if their partner can love them even when they are heartbroken, and if so, to draw the line and make a commitment. The singer believes that if they can both do this, they can love their life together "all the way."
Overall, "All the Way" is a song that explores the complexities of love and relationships. It touches on feeling trapped, not being honest, and the struggle to love someone completely. It also highlights the importance of support and being held in tough times, and the need for both partners to make a commitment to each other.

Looking for another way
I want to find an alternative solution
You and me better place
Together, we can make things better
Long lost everyday
Every day seems to be slipping away and getting lost
No the weather never goes our way
Things never seem to go as planned
Always lie to my face
You consistently deceive me directly
Clear to be in a cage
I am confined and unable to escape
Truth never has a place
Honesty and truth are not valued
We can never love all the way
Our love is restricted or incomplete
Love me all the way
Please love me fully and completely
Hold me all the way now
Support me wholly and immediately
Love me when I’m trying to pick myself up
Be there for me when I am struggling to recover
When I fall
When I am knocked down
Leave it up to me though
Allow me to handle it on my own
You don’t seem to follow through
You do not complete what you say you will
There’s something you need to know
I have information to share with you
Can you love heartbroken
Will you continue to love even when heartbroken
And if so, you decide, to draw the line
You must determine if and when to set boundaries
Maybe then we can love our life
Only with love and clear boundaries can we enjoy our lives
I ran out through the door
I fled through the exit
I can’t take this no more
I am no longer able to endure this
You don’t like when I leave
You are displeased when I depart
It’s what’s meant to be
This is the way things are supposed to happen

It doesn't take a genius
To tell me what I am
Or lecture me with poetry
And tell me that I can
I don't remember
What happened yesterday
But I don't give a damn about
What all those people say
It takes years to find the nerve
To be apart from what you've done
To find the truth inside yourself
And not depend on anyone
It takes years to find the nerve
To be apart from what you've done
To find the truth inside yourself
And not depend on anyone
It don't take no Houdini
To tell me what I am
Parasites and literates
They'd burn me if they can
But I don't give a damn about
What those people say
They pick you up and kick you out
They hurt you every day
It takes years to find the nerve
To be apart from what you've done
To find the truth inside yourself
And not…

It's like New Order wrote these songs for the 16 year old me. They meant so much to me then and so much to me now (aged 44). I'm grateful.

New Order is the most influential alternative band of the 80s, change my mind

A fair point. Quite the similarity, deliberate or not.
Sort of like how Nirvana ripped off Killing Joke, which really ticked them off, but neither of them knew of 'Life Goes On' by The Damned or '22 Faces' by Garden of Delight.
That one's an easy one though, as I accidentally took the same pattern for one of my own songs, just in a different key.
Though I do remember that one of the New Order members admitted that 'All the Way' was a response to 'Just Like Heaven'.
If I can't find the source for that again, take it with a grain of salt.

@Joystick Division You can't say that All the way is a rip off of Just Like Heaven, when they both resemble Wire's Ex-Lion Tamer.
Joystick Division
I could change your mind with Just Like Heaven by The Cure. At least for this song.
