I'm a healthcare worker who has experience both providing Fentanyl for medical purposes and treating people who have abused Fentanyl, and there are several elements of this story which make no sense at all. We're never told the method of exposure, just that she "saw that it was narcotics" and then she's on the ground. You can't just see it, there has to be a method of ingestion/inhalation. We're told the officer wore gloves "as she always did," then the officer is shown on the ground with no gloves on. Am I to believe that you have an officer actively overdosing and you took the time to remove the gloves BEFORE GIVING NARCAN??? Which is somewhat irrelevant anyway as touching Fentanyl is not enough to OD, you would need a liquid medium to activate it which is why cutaneous Fentanyl requires a skin patch with gel substance, which is worn for HOURS. So I'm to believe she opened a bag with just... loose powdered Fentanyl (?) sitting in there, and inhaled enough to OD but the suspect who was in the same car was totally unaffected? Also it's... more than a little odd that body cam footage is available from every officer EXCEPT THE ONE MAKING THE CLAIM.

This whole thing is just extremely suspect.

The only other explanation is they werent taking proper safety precautions.

also what rubs me the wrong way with this, assuming this was staged, the intended purpose was to show how dangerous fentynal is. But all i saw was a bunch of incapable officers unable to secure narcotics.

Also Narcan is a quite safe drug and multiple doses aren’t likely to cause any issues, it’s often not necessary but it’s better to be save, they should have training to check her pupils for constriction as this is the easiest sign for opioid intoxication as well as slow shallow breathing and being very bradycardic. Also most fentanyl is nit pure by any means so in general the stuff that makes it to an addict is generally no where near as strong as pure fentanyl, but pure fentanyl is absolutely beyond potent and absolutely can be absorbed through the skin and if someone is a small light person with no tolerance to opioids they absolutely can overdose easily from contact with it (pure fentanyl of course) and this fact is even more dramatic when it comes to other fentanyl analogs and derivatives such as Carfentanil which is approximately 100x more potent then fentanyl and doses are so small they are measured around 1ug which is literally 1/1000th of a milligram and it has a faster than onset and duration, which is so bad it often requires extreme doses of naloxone and repeated doses due to its extremely high affinity to the opioid receptors. It’s just nasty stuff, they use it on elephants and rhinos to sedate them lol

As a former paramedic who has handled fentanyl, this is not possible. If this were true doctors, medics and nurses would be falling out all the time. This is psychosomatic, she is having an panic attack. They should have tested her blood at the hospital and I bet my life on it that she didn't have fentanyl in her system. Fentanyl patches have to be stuck on the skin for 1 -2 hours to absorb a tiny amount of the drug (patches are very slow release and stay on for 12, or 24 or 48 hours) and powdered fentanyl has to be ingested (swallowed), or inhaled via your nose, or smoked or injected. And when you overdose you become completely unresponsive, your eyes roll back in your head and your skin is extremely pale, your lips are blue, your breathing is very shallow. Then you stop breathing altogether and your heart stops beating. This happens very rapidly. I have narcaned 200+ people, this is not a fentanyl overdose just her anxiety, psychosomatic or she is faking it cuz its not an overdose

You have to ingest, inhale, inject, unless you go into an illegal pill mill or illegal packaging operation where they are dealing with dozens of kilos in a confined space with poor ventilation. So this is not real, this is a panic attack or psychosomatic. If casual exposure caused people to overdose, hospice nurses, paramedics, doctors, anaesthesiologist, orthodontist pharmacist nurses would be falling out all over the place. This is not an overdose, one way to find out is urine drug test, which they should have had for a Workers Comp case.

As a nurse, I’ve given fentanyl hundreds of times. Had a bottle crack open because it must have been dropped by someone and got concentrated fentanyl as a liquid all over my hands. After a few choice words, I merely walked over and washed my hands off with no issues. This was a panic attack, pure and simple. In all my years, I have never seen a nurse “overdose” coming in contact with it.

I’m a pharmacy intern. We DOUBLE, sometimes triple count fentanyl tablets for the pharmacist to verify and check. You don’t just overdose by air, or touch. Otherwise, these random drug tests would all come back positive for everything we’ve picked up to document and place in the RX destroyer. If it was a transdermal fentanyl patch that comes in direct contact with skin, then I could see how. Anyway, this came up on my recommendations and it was very bizarre.

@@robertbowman9108 in hospitals they will give you a small SAFE dosage of it for pain. But the issue is with people pressing pills and selling them on the streets.
One fake pill you get can be a “safe” amount of fet (almost always too much still, even if you don’t die the feeling of it is scary) but the next one could have even a tiny bit more in it and you could overdose if it’s more than your body can handle.

Considering how overhyped the dangers of incidental contact with Fentanyl are amongst law enforcement, you can hardly blame them. They've had it drilled into their heads that a little minor contact can be deadly. Hear something like that long enough, and the subconscious may start believing it. You don't have much control over that part of your mind. Once it makes a decision about something, it's nearly impossible to override it consciously. You can get otherwise rational people doing some very irrational things as a result.

Just to let you all know, when you hear about drugs like fentanyl overdosing officers on the field simply by 'touching', that's not happening. They're actually taking them. And yes, a lot of officers are addicted to the drugs they find. It's common for drug dealers to have their drugs stolen by cops with no word on their disposal.

To play devils advocate, it is possibly a case of hysteria. The mind can do crazy things if under stressful situations. Maybe she was recently told how dangerous fentanyl was and when she was exposed to it her mind triggered the symptoms subconsciously. Similar things have happened before.

That being said, hysteria is extremely rare, and it is much more likely she consumed the fentanyl herself.

I asked a street dealer about fentanyl and if he has ever tried it or overdosed from it and his answer was no to both questions! He told me he first started selling crack and heroin but then heroin was no more to be found but replaced with fentanyl and sense he was a dealer for so long he got comfortable weighing and packaging it without gloves so he told me its beyond him that people overdose especially just by air exposer or hand to hand exposer. But one thing is that as an addict myself its hard to admit it even being clean for or wanting be free from addiction and denial is part of addiction cause of all the discrimination by society!

My 1st hand account, to anyone being addicted to H, doing time,, surrounded with "some" hardened criminal types,, the one's who don't actually care about doing time, watching these Cholo's, turn into the most caring and supportive humans I've ever seen,, when a Fellow Cholo dude, not known, no gang ties etc,, they rushed to help him,, Even I had to watch him for a shift,, this Gangster was coming off H.. with absolutely no help insight.. jail isn't like prison...
I had no idea, how awful it was for addicts, with forced sobriety being a far worse punishment...

anyone whose been addicted to cocaine has used trace amounts of fentanyl, and for me, the worst that ever happened was i went to bed for the night and woke up early because there was still cocaine in it. however i was not ever an intentional fent user, i had the test strips after one or two bad experiences and constant narcan on hand. never had to use it in three years, i ended up giving it to my friends when i got sober. they still have it.

that being said one of my friends died of accidental fent use in October. so its extremely serious and we shouldnt make light of that. i wish all the time i had given him some of the narcan too, but we had a falling out. so. Rest In Peace Josh, and anyone reading this -- get narcan. dont use alone.

You reminded me about a scientific paper on fentanyl I've read recently. There was a large paragraph about panic attacks caught on body cams, presented by media as overdoses. They interpreted medical data of few victims and non were actually poisoned by the drug. These body cam videos with dramatic narration happened to be one of the most impressive drug infomercials ever. People are absolutely obsessed with the drug. That's all good but maybe something should be done so the officers wouldn't be dropping like flies because of stress caused by lack of knowledge. American war on drug is so fascinating.

The most logical answer is the Placebo effect leading to a Psychosomatic reaction where she believed she OD'd and therefore suffered the outward effects. Psychology professors often do experiments where some students drink real beer and some drink Non-alcoholic beer, yet everyone in the experiment gets "drunk" because they were expecting to be.

As a MD I can say 100% that handling fentanyl for a couple seconds will not cause an overdose. There have been several of these videos going around and I don't know what is causing this but I do know that an officer tested after an "overdose" tested negative for the presence of fentanyl. I could go on but simply being in the vicinity of fentanyl doesn't put you at harm.

Completely unrealistic, they are trained to handle this stuff that's why they wear gloves and are extremely cautious because this substance is that dangerous for human consumption. The addicts have a higher tolerance and that's why they can handle it a bit more, but even them they know full well they are playing with death. Fentanyl can be found in any drug on the black market atm so, if I were you I'd stay far away from any drugs. FYI it can be absorbed through the skin.

Saw a couple Dr’s
do an interview on this claim of cops saying that they OD by just seeing fentanyl. They said it is medically impossible and that it is most likely a nocebo effect and/or anxiety attacks. I worked with the displaced on the streets for years and passed out harm reduction supplies and was in contact with fentanyl multiple times with never any side effects. They really should fact check before releasing this video.

If people were just hiding drugs in things and everyone had malicious intent and all of the Halloween candy nonsense wasn't a scare tactic. It wouldn't be a problem either way. Why? For the most part I think the word about this is out. At least where I am located. Same thing happened and the cops wanted to use the footage to show how dangerous it is to touch a couple of granules. The news followed up with medical experts on why the event could not have happened the way it was reported.

It's one thing for police departments to report and release this, but it's insane that news organizations are still covering this. Especially without including the fact that multiple doctors are on the record saying this type of overdose by proximity cannot happen.

Edit:

Whoever is in charge of this video had removed my explanation as for why his can't happen or someone "reported" it because they were bothered by the facts - including numerous explanations from medical experts on the subject.

It is not just my opinion, it is the opinion backed up by medical experts. Also, if this was something that was possible, it would be occurring at least once in a while in a medical setting where they handle fentanyl - and yet it doesn’t occur. Not at all. Here is an emergency room doctor discussing how fentanyl can be absorbed and how what happens in these videos is not because of fentanyl toxicity.

“Its a common myth that just by touching fentanyl you can absorb it, but you really can’t…It’s so poorly absorbed through the skin that pharmaceutical companies spent millions of dollars to produce a fentanyl patch - it’s a special way to deliver fentanyl - and even then it’s not vey well absorbed. But definitely powder or pills are not very well absorbed through the skin.”

“…worrying about skin absorption is not important.” [in regards to fentanyl]

“Inhaling fentanyl can “technically” cause an overdose, but it doesn’t get aerosolized very well. You can play with it - technically have it fall and you really wont breath significant amounts of it. It is not dangerous to walk in a building that has fentanyl in it - you do not need a respirator or anything like that.”

In regards to whether first responders need to worry about fentanyl: “It is not something first responders need to be worrying about.”

There are three possible explanations I can think of:

1) she took a hit. Obviously she could have taken a hit from the drug and the other cops are covering for her

2) anxiety. She might have heard about "contact overdose" and when she breathed the stuff in, she had something similar to a panic attack.

3) allergy. Until you see someone's throat close up because someone close to them is eating nuts, you might not believe this one. But there are all sorts of allergies and all sorts of reactions to it.
