He'll never love you, the way that I love you
'Cause if he did, no no, he wouldn't make you cry
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. Wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye, now
Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Listen to me now
He's never near you to comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are fallin' baby from your eyes
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. I wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye, na-na na-na-na na na
Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
The opening lyrics of "Hey Nas" are actually a sample from the classic song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam. Nas uses this sample to deliver a message to the rap game, specifically the rappers who were in the game for the wrong reasons. He tells them that their time is up and the good rappers who are in the game for the love of the art and culture will prevail.
Nas compares himself to the lead singer of Steam, who is telling someone to kiss their past goodbye, to move on to something better. The lyrics "He'll never love you, the way that I love you. 'Cause if he did, no no, he wouldn't make you cry" could be Nas calling out rappers who don't care for the culture and just use it as a way to make money. Nas believes that if they truly loved hip hop, they wouldn't be making music that degrades it.
Nas later says "He's never near you to comfort and cheer you. When all those sad tears are fallin' baby from your eyes." Nas is telling those rappers that they don't care about their listeners and don't create music with the intention of bringing them up. He finishes with the iconic "Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye," a call to arms for the good rappers to take over and push out the ones who are in it for the wrong reasons.
