All Outta Angst
NOFX Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm not insane, I'm not bummed out
I got no one to blame, nothing to change
I got no evil to fight

One thing's for sure, I'm all outta angst
Society don't bother me
And there's something wrong with that
So I'm off to Pakistan, learn the laws of Islam
Fundamentalism, forget that rock-n-roll
No cigarette, no drink, in fact
It's difficult to think about getting laid
When you don't even get to see her face
I'm not insane

I'm not insane, I'm not liquored
I got nothin' to do, nothin' to lose
I got no place to call home
One thing's for sure, I'm all outta angst
Society don't bother me, there's something wrong with that

Next stop Mongolia
Don't get to golf or fuck or bowl with 'ya
Throw out that handicap
No stepping out, till spring, in fact it's
Difficult to sing when it's 20 below

And that's during the day
I'm not insane

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of NOFX's "All Outta Angst" is a portrait of a man who feels like he no longer fits into society. He is neither insane nor saddened by the world around him. He has nothing to blame for his situation and nothing to change. However, he is all out of angst, which is an odd sensation for him. He feels like he should be upset about something or at least have a reason to rebel. But he simply doesn't feel any anger towards society. This lack of concern for the world around him worries him.

As a result of his ennui, he decides to leave the United States in search of a new challenge. He chooses Pakistan to learn the laws of Islam and fundamentalism because he wants to forget about rock-n-roll. He wants to live in a country where he can't smoke or drink, and where it is challenging even to think about sex. He feels like he needs to make himself uncomfortable in order to regain his passion for life. Unfortunately, this only leads to further despair, and he decides to go to Mongolia, where the temperatures are so cold he can't even sing.

The song seems to suggest that the man's attempts to find a new challenge are absurd, as they only increase his feelings of isolation from the rest of society. While others might find his search for meaning in life foolish or fruitless, it is his journey - and he is all outta angst.
