The group were initially known as Pledis Boys, after their unofficial promotions with their seniors, Son Dambi and After School for their Happy Pledis 2012 “Love Letter” single. They also appeared on stage with them promoting the song "Love Letter". They made an unofficial first appearance on 29 December 2011 at the 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun, performing the 'shuffle' dance with labelmates After School. They made their first CF with After School's Lizzy.
On January 16, 2012, Pledis Entertainment revealed NU'EST's leader, JR. The next day they revealed two new members, Minhyun and Aron. And on January 19, they finally introduced the entire group by revealing the identity of their final two members, Baekho and Ren.
The music video for "Face" was released on March 15, 2012. NU'EST made their broadcast debut on the same day on Mnet's M! Countdown where they performed "I'm Sorry", a b-side track from their debut single album, and the title track "Face".
On July 9, 2014, NU'EST released their first full album, "Re:Birth", with the lead single "Good Bye Bye". They made their Japanese debut on November 5, with the single "Shalala Ring".
JR, Baekho, Minhyun, and Ren participated in the reality television series Produce 101 Season 2 during the first half of 2017. During their appearance on the show, previously released albums, rose on South Korean album charts, reflecting a sudden surge in popularity of the group. After the final episode of Produce aired, NU'EST's previous releases shot back up on music charts and topped the Gaon Chart. Minhyun ranked within the top 11, earning a position in the temporary boy group Wanna One, and he promoted exclusively with them for 1.5 years. The remaining members announced they would be promoting as NU'EST W until Minhyun's return. Due to the group's sudden surge in popularity, they (as NU'EST W) returned to music shows to promote their single "Hello" (first released in 2013), and ranked number 11 on Inkigayo.
On April 19, 2021, the group released their second studio album, "Romanticize", with the lead single "Inside Out". The album topped Hanteo's weekly album sales chart and earned two crowns on the Gaon Music Chart. The lead single also went on to score wins on M! Countdown, Music Bank, Show! Music Core, and Inkigayo, earning the group its second music show grand slam since their single "Love Me" in 2019. Following the success of their second album, the group spent the rest of 2021 mostly working on their solo projects.
On February, 28, 2022, it was announced that the group's exclusive contract with Pledis Entertainment will end on March 14. It was also announced that members Aron, JR and Ren will leave the agency at the conclusion of their contract, while Baekho and Minhyun opted to renew. With the news of their contract expiring, the group confirmed their disbandment through handwritten letters to their fans, announcing their decision to pursue individual projects. A final compilation album, "Needle & Bubble", was released on March 15 to mark the group's 10-year anniversary before officially disbanding, with the new song "Again" ("다시, 봄) as the title track.

"Daybreak" by NU'EST tells the story of a couple who has found each other along the way of wandering through space, and have created memories that cannot be forgotten. The first verse describes their meeting, where the singer claims that they have met each other while wandering from the moon to the stars. They found themselves falling in love with each other as if their love was like watercolor on paper, which cannot be erased. However, the sweet moment between the couple is interrupted by the singer’s thoughts that they won't be able to hide their growing love towards each other.
In the second verse, the lyrics hint at the possibility of the couple’s separation. The singer says that the empty room is filled with moonlight, which could vanish like a dream (out of my life). Yet, the singer hopes that they are not alone and has faith that their love story won't end. The third verse sings about a sleepless night and how the singer finds solace in the moonlight, which resembles the eyes of their lover. The chorus repeats the idea of wandering through the universe together, the emotions of love, and the unforgettable memories they have created.
Overall, "Daybreak" portrays the journey of two people and the unstoppable feel of falling in love, as well as, the reminiscing of memories and the fear of losing what they have found.
